Former 2nd-round pick Lonnie Johnson agrees to return to Houston
The Houston Texans are bringing back one of their own.
Former second-round defensive back and special teams player Lonnie Johnson Jr. agreed to return to the Texans, where he started his NFL career. Houston and Johnson agreed upon a one-year deal worth $2.5 million with the veteran defensive back, according to KPRC’s 2 Aaron Wilson.

Johnson, 28, started his career in Houston after the Texans selected him No. 54 overall in the 2019 NFL draft. In three seasons, he played 44 games and caught three interceptions. Johnson played more than 400 special teams snaps as well during his tenure.
Houston traded Johnson to the Kansas City Chiefs ahead of the 2022 season, but he was waived before the season. Johnson stayed in the AFC South and joined the Tennessee Titans for the season, where he appeared in 12 games.
Johnson played for the New Orleans Saints in 2023 on a one-year deal. He played in 12 games with nine tackles and a fumble recovery. Johnson played in 249 special team snaps as well this past season.

Houston was in the backup free-agent defensive back market after letting Tavierre Thomas and Desmond King test the open market. King will return, but the rest remain unclear. Jimmie Ward’s injuries and Jalen Pitre’s struggles in year two led to the Texans adding depth in the defensive backfield. Johnson also adds another veteran special teams player to Frank Ross’ top unit.
