FOOTBALL: Sequoyah thrashes Adair for first 4-0 start since 2009
Sep. 26—Logan Hattaway and Dylan Piguet practically told the Warriors to 'catch us if you can', and they couldn't.
The senior running back duo was nigh unstoppable, combining for 264 yards rushing and five touchdowns as Sequoyah earned its first 4-0 start since 2009 with a 56-16 shellacking of Adair on Friday night at Gene Winfield Stadium in District 2A-8 action.
The Eagles finished with 315 yards rushing, averaging 11.7 yards per carry. Piguet managed an incredible 22.6 yards per touch with 113 yards on five carries with touchdown runs of 35, 22 and 52 while Hattaway notched 151 yards on 12 carries (12.6 ypc) with scoring runs of 10 and 20 yards.
The pair scored the first three touchdowns to build a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter before Dylan Burks returned a punt 79 yards to the end zone. Sequoyah then closed the first half with a 35-0 lead following a 59-yard touchdown pass from Landon Gilbreath to Karson Bickel.
Gilbreath completed 4 of 6 passes for 99 yards and two touchdowns, capping his night with a 9-yard scoring toss to Cade Ogden that increased the advantage to 49-0 in the third quarter. He also rushed for 35 yards on five carries (7 ypc).
Bickel registered three sacks on defense in addition to his one reception.
Piguet — who also had a team-high 14 tackles on defense and hit 8-of-8 extra points — scored twice in the third, including a 52-yarder that made it a 56-0 spread.
Adair (0-4) recorded touchdown runs of 9 and 26 yards with a pair of 2-point conversions to stave off the shutout.
The Warriors experienced little success outside of the garbage-time scores, committing three turnovers — two fumbles and one interception — while averaging 3.9 yards per play. Burks recovered both fumbles while Caleb Harwell snagged the pick.
The Class 2A No. 9 Eagles are averaging 57.5 points per game while allowing about 13.8, but they'll have their toughest test next week at No. 2 Rejoice Christian, which has put up similar numbers while outscoring opponents 228-62 through four games.
Barnsdall 52, Claremore Christian 0: It took Barnsdall only a few minutes.
The Panthers scored 38 points in the first quarter alone, including 30 during a four-minute span, thanks in part to two interceptions and a fumble recovery Thursday night.
The game ended at halftime because of the 50-point mercy rule in eight-man football. Barnsdall outgained Claremore Christian 390-65 despite the expedited finish.
Logan Jones was a bright spot for the Warriors, though, completing 4 of 4 passes for 15 yards while rushing for a team-high 14 yards on three carries. Starting quarterback Tyler Stephens went 2-of-9 for 39 yards and two interceptions.
The Panthers (4-1) finished with 277 yards rushing, with four ball carriers reaching over 30 yards and five scoring touchdowns. Easton Malone led the way with 90 yards and two touchdowns on four carries (22.5 ypc), and quarterback Maverick Lanphear was next at 59 yards and a score on five touches while also completing 6 of 10 passes for 110 yards and another touchdown.
CCS (2-2) hosts Life Christian (0-3) on Friday night.
