Football roundup: Bath wins on late TD, St. Johns, Lansing Catholic among Week 1 winners

ST. JOHNS 54, OKEMOS 14

EAST LANSING — Brody Dush threw for a game-high 115 yards and a touchdown and added a rushing score for the Redwings in a nonleague win over Okemos. Mark Bendele led all rushers with 96 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Schomisch, Michael Oberlin, Evan Peele and Thomas Putman each picked up a rushing score and Brayden Struble grabbed three catches for 79 yards and a score for St. Johns. Alejandro Urrea threw for 53 yards and two scores tor Okemos. Dominic Eastman had 38 yards receiving and a touchdown, while Nathan Precise paced the defense for the Wolves with seven tackles.

LANSING CATHOLIC 35, WAVERLY 20

DELTA TWP. -- Lansing Catholic scored 28 unanswered points after play resumed Friday while rallying for the season-opening win. Alex Fernandez threw for 139 yards and two touchdowns and added a pair of rushing scores for Cougars, who overcame a 20-7 deficit. Xavier Luea had two catches for 105 yards and a touchdown and Braden Rabideau had a pair of touchdown catches for Lansing Catholic. Jahi Wood ran for a team-high 215 yards and scored three touchdowns. Cayden Bell led the defense with a team-high six tackles and Jeremiah Spencer grabbed an interception for Waverly.

BATH 26, CHESANING 22

Brayden Bennett threw for 203 yards and connected with Bradlee Uhlmann for a 5-yard touchdown with 13 seconds remaining to lift the Bees to the season-opening win. Bennett had two touchdown passes, while Uhlmann ran for 186 yards and two scores and had 124 yards receiving and a touchdown. Max Parry had 81 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Jay Kreisler, Ethan Wicks and Cole Chamberlain each had interceptions for Bath.

ALMA 30, SHEPHERD 29

SHEPHERD — The Panthers held on for a season-opening victory. Jacoby Dunlap threw for 101 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 98 yards and two scores to lead Alma. Alex Reyes had 72 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns for the Panthers, who also got a safety from Cole O'Boyle.

CHARLOTTE 55, THREE RIVERS 22

CHARLOTTE - Tyler Bidelman rushed for 157 yards and three scores and Cutler Brandt picked up 136 yards on the ground and added two touchdowns for the Orioles in their win. Brandt added 15 tackles and returned an interception 65 yards for a score. Carson Berkompas finished with 11 tackles and two interceptions.

PORTLAND ST. PATRICK 34, COLEMAN 20

COLEMAN -- Brady Leonard had 95 yards passing, 82 yards rushing and four total touchdowns to lead the Shamrocks to a season-opening victory over Coleman. Lucas Simon ran for 60 yards, Hudson King rushed for 43 yards and a score and Riley Mosser had 53 yards receiving and a touchdown for Portland St. Patrick.

OWOSSO 48, EATON RAPIDS 12

OWOSSO -- Liam Patrick threw for three touchdowns and punched in a rushing score to lead the Trojans to a nonleague home win over Eaton Rapids to start the season. Hoyt Patrick scored a rushing touchdown and ran back an 80-yard kickoff return for a score, Daniel Wittum grabbed two receiving scores and Tegan Passinault hauled in a score for Owosso. No Eaton Rapids statistics were available.

MAPLE VALLEY 38, MESICK 14

MESICK -- Andrew Shepard ran for a game-high 189 yards and a touchdown as the Lions opened their season with a road victory over Mesick. Jakeb McDonald threw for 130 yards and a touchdown and Cam Carpenter hauled in three receptions for 123 yards and a score for Maple Valley.

NORTH MUSKEGON 17, PEWAMO-WESTPHALIA 14

MUSKEGON -- Quarterback Dylan May ran for 113 yards and a touchdown and threw for 88 yards as the Pirates fell just short in a season-opening loss to North Muskegon. Brayton Thelen punched in a rushing score and led the defense with 15 tackles for Pewamo-Westphalia.

BELDING 22, IONIA 11

BELDING -- Brennan Brownell had a rushing touchdown and Parker Seidelman had a field goal for the Bulldogs in their nonleague loss. Ionia led 11-8 at the half with Seidelman hitting a field goal to close the second quarter. Belding scored twice in the fourth quarter to rally for the win.

STOCKBRIDGE 38, SPRINGPORT 0

SPRINGPORT -- Drew Robinson picked up a team-high 115 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns and grabbed five receptions for 101 yards and two scores to lead the Panthers to a road win over Springport. Jalen Rogozinski threw for 159 yards and two touchdowns and Brock Rochow snagged two interceptions for Stockbridge.

ITHACA 63, HOMER 6

HOMER — Jackson Conn ran for 100 yards and two scores and passed for 59 yards and a touchdown while helping the Yellowjackets to a season-opening win. Nathan Mikesell ran for two touchdowns and Owen Mikula and Noah Risner each had TD runs for Ithaca.

ZEELAND EAST 35, WILLIAMSTON 28

ZEELAND — Zeeland East scored a 1-yard touchdown with 1:40 to play for the game-winner against Williamston. The Hornets led 13-0 at the half before Zeeland East put together its rally. Zach Cribbs threw for 297 yards and three scores, while Max McCune had 161 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

DECKERVILLE 68, ASHLEY 0

Will Long had 28 yards receiving and 22 yards rushing , while Gavin Malek had seven tackles for the Bears in their loss.
