GAYLORD ― We are officially over the halfway point in the high school football regular season.

Fortunately for area teams, all their goals are still in front of them.

Two of the three area teams were in action on Friday, Sept. 22, with Gaylord traveling to Cadillac for a critical Big North Conference matchup while Gaylord St. Mary traveled to Onaway for a Ski Valley Conference matchup.

Here is how games played out this week:

Note: Johannesburg-Lewiston picked a forfeit win over Sault Ste Marie Korah Collegiate (Canada), improving their record to 3-2

Gaylord (5-0, 3-0 BNC) was tied with Cadillac in a critical matchup with Cadillac as the fourth quarter began on Friday evening, locked at 14 points apiece with the lone other undefeated team in conference play with a league title potentially in the balance.

That's when the Blue Devils' offense took over.

Gaylord scored 21 unanswered points in the final quarter, running away with a 35-14 victory to take firm control of the top spot in the BNC standings.

Senior Russell Hush dominated on the ground, rushing for 221 yards and four touchdowns, the seventh-most rushing yards in a single game in Gaylord history. That was part of a 351-yard rushing night for the team as the Blue Devils handed the defending BNC champions their first conference loss since 2021.

Gaylord now controls their own destiny in the conference title race with three league games left.

The Blue Devils host Alpena on Friday, Sept. 29 for their next matchup.

The Gaylord St. Mary's Snowbirds proved too much for a rebuilding Onaway Cardinals team to handle on Friday, Sept. 22 as they ran away with a 46-6 victory on the road for their fourth league win of the season.

It was another dominant game for junior quarterback Daniel Jacobson as he led the team with 243 total yards, (166 rushing yards and 77 passing yards) and a touchdown. JT Greenier had three touchdowns of his own, scoring twice on offense and once on defense.

GSM ended up with 455 total yards to Onaway's 133.

The Snowbirds will be back on the road this Saturday, Sept. 30 as they travel to Pellston to take on the Hornets.
