Football picks: Five Bayside South teams look for their first wins of the season.

Week 1 of Bayside Conference football is officially a wrap, as teams prepare for Week 2. And for most of the Bayside South teams, Week 2 will give them a chance to rebound and pick up their first wins.

Snow Hill grabbed a road win in Annapolis last week, while Parkside, Wi-Hi, Bennett and Washington each fell to their opponents. And Week 2 will also be the debut of the 2023 Stephen Decatur Seahawks, as they play their first official game of the year. There will be a lot to watch for this week on the gridiron.

Here are the previews and predictions for Week 2 of football in the Bayside South:

Washington at James M. Bennett

Sept. 7 | 6 p.m. | Wicomico County Stadium

Bennett's Zakai Smullen (1) scores a touchdown against Wi-Hi Friday, Oct. 28, 2022, at Wicomico County Stadium in Salisbury, Maryland.
Bennett's Zakai Smullen (1) scores a touchdown against Wi-Hi Friday, Oct. 28, 2022, at Wicomico County Stadium in Salisbury, Maryland.

Both Washington and James M. Bennett lost their opening games of the year last week, with Washington falling 57-0 to Colonel Richardson at home, and Bennett losing 58-42 to Polytech on the road. Now, they face off in the lone Bayside South battle this week.

Both of these teams are looking for not just their first win of the season, but their first wins in multiple seasons, as both teams have gone winless over the last two seasons. While giving up 58 points is obviously less than ideal in a loss, Bennett showcased their offensive potential against Polytech last week by also putting up 42 points of their own and attempting a comeback after falling behind early.

With the game at home in Wicomico County Stadium, this seems to set up perfectly for the Clippers to get back in the win column for the first time in a while, walking away with a 1-1 record win as the final buzzer sounds Thursday night.

Pick: James M. Bennett

Wicomico at Easton

Sept. 8 | 6 p.m.

Wi-Hi's Takai Hugee (1) gets the snap in the game against Linganore Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, in Salisbury, Maryland. Linganore defeated WiHi 40-0 to start the season.
Wi-Hi's Takai Hugee (1) gets the snap in the game against Linganore Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, in Salisbury, Maryland. Linganore defeated WiHi 40-0 to start the season.

Wi-Hi faced a tough matchup in their Week 1 matchup against Linganore, falling 40-0 to a team that has been a mainstay in the upper echelon of Maryland high school football over the past decade. Now, coach James McMurdo's squad will head to Easton in search of their first win of the season.

While Wi-Hi was overmatched against Linganore, Easton dominated their Week 1 matchup against North East, winning 38-6 against a team that won just one game last year. It's unclear what can be taken away from either of those results heading into their Week 2 matchups, as both teams prepare to size up against teams that should be more on the same playing field as themselves for the first time this season.

Wi-Hi-Easton matchups have provided some great entertainment for football fans over the last two seasons as a matchup between two Bayside Conference contenders, and Bayside football fans will hope for more of the same Friday night. But Wi-Hi will walk away with the close win.

Pick: Wi-Hi

Parkside at North Caroline

Sept. 8 | 6 p.m.

Parkside's Canaan Mapp (8) celebrates his sack on Kent Island Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023, in Salisbury, Maryland.
Parkside's Canaan Mapp (8) celebrates his sack on Kent Island Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023, in Salisbury, Maryland.

Parkside was the lone team to play a Saturday game last week, as they hosted defending Bayside Conference Champions Kent Island at County Stadium in Week 1. And for most of the first half, the Rams were in lock-step with a team that has dominated the Bayside in recent years, leading at one point and only going down one score at the end of the second quarter. Kent Island would eventually take command of the game in the third quarter, but the first half was an impressive showing for the Rams.

Parkside will take the trip to North Caroline to play the Bulldogs on the road this week, and will hope that the big plays they received from playmakers like quarterback Canaan Mapp and receivers Elijah Donaldson and Cam Johnson carry over into this week. Linebackers Brad Mueller and Shaheed Armstrong also impressed on defense for Parkside.

North Caroline defeated Cambridge on the road last week, 28-14, meaning their game against Parkside will also be their home opener and a chance to start 2-0 on the year. It should be a good matchup between the two Class 2A schools, but I think Parkside moves to 1-1 with the road win.

Pick: Parkside

Nandua at Snow Hill

Sept. 8 | 6 p.m.

Snow Hill's Jayceere Fields (5) catches the kickoff against Decatur Thursday, Oct. 27, 2022, in Berlin, Maryland. The Seahawks defeated the Eagles 49-6.
Snow Hill's Jayceere Fields (5) catches the kickoff against Decatur Thursday, Oct. 27, 2022, in Berlin, Maryland. The Seahawks defeated the Eagles 49-6.

Snow Hill was the lone Bayside South team to leave Week 1 with a victory, as they defeated Annapolis Area Christian School 20-0 on the road. Now, they are set to host Nandua in a Virginia-Maryland Eastern Shore battle Friday night.

Snow Hill put together a dominant defensive performance in the shutout, forcing turnovers and shutting down the opposing offense. They'll have what projects to be a tougher task this upcoming week against a Nandua team that has put up a lot of points against them during their last two matchups with Snow Hill the last two seasons. We'll see if Snow Hill can keep that defensive output going into next year.

Nandua has had Snow Hill's number the last few years, and Friday night's game should be a good one, but the Warriors leave Maryland with the victory.

Pick: Nandua

Randallstown at Stephen Decatur

Sept. 8 | 6 p.m.

Decatur's Brycen Coleman (9) rushes against Wright in the first round of the 2A East Region playoffs Friday, Nov. 4, 2022, in Berlin, Maryland. The Seahawks defeated the Mustangs 45-13.
Decatur's Brycen Coleman (9) rushes against Wright in the first round of the 2A East Region playoffs Friday, Nov. 4, 2022, in Berlin, Maryland. The Seahawks defeated the Mustangs 45-13.

While the other Bayside South teams played their first games last week, this will be the first game of the season for Stephen Decatur after Queen Anne's forfeited their scheduled Week 1 game with the Seahawks. And in their home and season opener, the Seahawks will face a team from across the Bay Bridge.

The Randallstown Rams will make the trip to Berlin to face Decatur, as they come off a loss to Owings Mills in their home opener last week. The Rams are also coming off back-to-back 1-8 seasons and look to grab multiple wins this year.

The Seahawks have been known for their high-powered offenses over the last few years, and with star quarterback Brycen Coleman returning, along with multiple speedy playmakers at receiver and in the backfield, Friday night's game should be the kick-off to another successful season for the Seahawks.

Pick: Stephen Decatur
