Florida State 80, Idaho 14

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- With serious off-field issues clouding his future, Florida State freshman quarterback Jameis Winston blocked the distractions out Saturday and helped send the senior class off with a bang against overmatched Idaho.

During their home finale, the Seminoles scored a school-record number of points in an 80-14 rout.

Winston suited up for the BCS No. 2 Seminoles for the second straight game, despite being tied last week to a 2012 sexual assault case that has yet to be resolved. The Heisman Trophy front-runner did nothing to unseat himself as the favorite, passing for 225 yards and four touchdowns in a little more than a half.

While Winston's potential legal trouble has dominated the landscape in Tallahassee lately, football reclaimed center stage Saturday as the Seminoles (11-0) continued to march toward a possible date in the national championship game.

Winston was greeted to louder-than-usual cheers before the first series, and it didn't take long for him to start dissecting the Vandals (1-10) en route to a 42-7 halftime lead.

Winston was 5-for-6 passing for 67 yards on FSU's opening two drives. The first was capped by a 60-yard touchdown run by junior tailback Devonta Freeman, and the second ended with a Winston-to-Kelvin Benjamin TD pass from 32 yards out.

Back-to-back picks of Idaho quarterback Taylor Davis' passes led to FSU's next two scores.

Senior linebacker Telvin Smith returned his interception 79 yards for his second pick-6 this season, while defensive tackle Jacobbi McDaniel's turnover set up Winston's second TD pass of the game, a 46-yard strike over the middle to one of FSU's 24 seniors, Kenny Shaw. The wide receiver added a 20-yard TD catch from Winston just before halftime and led FSU with 107 yards receiving.

FSU running back James Wilder Jr. piled on to FSU's first-half onslaught when he accounted for every yard during a five-play, 85-yard scoring drive to put the Seminoles comfortably ahead 35-0 six minutes before intermission.

The Vandals, who were held to five yards rushing in the first half and finished with a season-low 59, got their first TD with 41 seconds left in the half when Davis hit wide receiver Richard Montgomery for a 15-yard score.

That snapped a streak of no touchdowns allowed by the Seminoles' defense in 11 straight quarters. FSU also tallied a season-high eight sacks Saturday. Junior defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan led the way with six tackles and 2 1/2 sacks.

Davis finished 16 of 38 passing for 221 yards, a touchdown and three picks, and junior wide receiver Dezmon Epps led Idaho with seven catches for 126 yards. The Vandals' Roman Runner, who switched from wide receiver to defensive back a week ago, had a game-high 12 tackles and one sack.

Winston, who is just 46 yards from breaking the ACC's freshman passing record, played only one series in the second half. He threw a second TD to Benjamin, from 21 yards, before giving way to backup Sean Maguire.

Maguire finished 9-for-14 for 84 yards and a TD pass to Ryan Green, and he led five second-half scoring drives. But Maguire also threw a pass in the end zone that was picked off by Idaho's Trey Williams.

The Vandals, who got their second TD with 42 seconds left on a 14-yard TD pass from Joshua McCain to Najee Lovett, dropped to 1-10 and lost their sixth in a row. FSU was the third undefeated program Idaho had faced this season (along with Fresno State and Northern Illinois), and the Vandals dropped those games by a combined 186-63. Idaho's lone win came in Week 5 against Temple.

The Vandals are now 1-32 all-time against ranked teams -- including 29 straight losses -- with their last win coming in 1947 against Utah.

Freeman led the Seminoles with 129 yards on 11 carries, and backup Karlos Williams tacked on two second-half TDs and tallied 114 yards rushing.

NOTES: Saturday marked the first meeting between the two schools ... Idaho received a $950,000 check from FSU to make the trip to Tallahassee ... FSU kicker Roberto Aguayo, who already broke the ACC record for consecutive PATs in the Seminoles' last game, is now 80-for-80 on the season. He broke the NCAA mark of 77 straight set by Louisville's Art Carmody in 2004. ... Idaho is playing its final season as an FBS independent before rejoining the Sun Belt next year ... FSU's 80 points tied the second-most in ACC history.
