We have refrained from getting too much into Michigan football’s chances to get into the College Football Playoff before we saw what would happen on Saturday. But now, with the ‘mighty’ Buckeyes vanquished, the Wolverines are the Big Ten’s sole opportunity to make it to the four-team postseason.
Predictive site FiveThirtyEight has been handicapping the chances for each team to make the College Football Playoff all season long. Back in October, after Michigan had taken down Wisconsin and Nebraska, FiveThirtyEight only gave the maize and blue a 21% shot to make it to the playoff. However, now that the Wolverines are heading to the Big Ten Championship Game, a game in which they are favored, the odds have skyrocketed to 76% — the second-best opportunity to make it in.

What’s more, Michigan has the third-best odds to win it all — behind Georgia and Alabama, two teams that play each other on Saturday in what’s likely an elimination game. At the moment, Georgia has a 42% chance to win the national title while Michigan has a 15% chance to Alabama’s 21% chance. Cincinnati, the Wolverines’ presumptive opponent in the first round, has an 8% chance at a title.
