Five remaining options for Notre Dame in their quest for a transfer quarterback

The Irish haven’t had the best luck in finding a quarterback in the transfer portal. Yesterday, another big name was taken off the board when Texas’ Hudson Card decided to head up North to the correct state, but not the right team, as he selected to continue his career at Purdue.

The list of intriguing options continues to dwindle, as DJ Uiagalelei opted for oregon stateDevin Leary choose KentuckyCollin Schlee made a big jump from kent state to UCLA and Graham Mertz picked Florida.

The Irish were connected to Card and Leary, but obviously both choose elsewhere to strap their helmets up next. Here are a few options for Marcus Freeman and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees that are still out in the portal that make sense for Notre Dame.

Purdue’s Brady Allen

It was a domino effect with Card’s decision, as Allen entered the portal on Sunday, a few hours prior to the announcement of the transfer. An Indiana native, Allen is a pure-passer but is a bit of an unknown. He attempted just three passes, completing one for 8 yards. Allen would have four-years of eligibility remaining which is a plus. He visited South Bend multiple times as a recruit, but was never offered a scholarship. Maybe that changes in Allen’s second recruitment.

Grayson McCall

It’s a bit odd that McCall is playing for the Chanticleer’s in the Birmingham Bowl, but that has given schools plenty of time to re-recruit him. He has been linked to the open spot at Florida, but they have taken a commitment from Mertz. There has been some rumored issues surrounding McCall and his credits, so he might end up not being an option after all, but from a pure-football standpoint, he is.

Spencer Sanders

The Cowboys have a prolific passing offense and Sanders was the linchpin of that for the last four seasons. He passed for over 2,000 yards in each of those years, which his QBR over 128 in every year as well. We all saw what he could do last year in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl. Sanders moves well with his feet, he scored 8 touchdowns on the ground this year. As a graduate transfer, his likelihood of joining Freeman and Rees is much higher.

Luke Altmyer

The Ole Miss staff did Altmyer a solid, after losing the starting job to Jaxson Dart, they only played him in three games thus preserving a redshirt year. Altmyer will have three years of eligibility so he’s going to warrant more attention due to that. It’s hard to know where he is leaning at the moment, but the Irish should explore if they could be a potential match.

Sam Hartman

The most likely scenario is that the Irish land Hartman. The former Wake Forest quarterback has been linked to Notre Dame since his very good Gasparilla Bowl where he completed almost 64% of his passes for 280 yards and three touchdowns. It’s not a done deal that Hartman will end up in South Bend, but it does seem like the interest is mutual at this point.
