FHSAA playoff roundup: Matanzas, Atlantic shut out in first-round road trips

Jashawn Washington scored three touchdowns, and Lincoln's defense held Matanzas to just 29 yards of total offense in a 49-0 Region 1-3S quarterfinal victory Friday night in Tallahassee.

Matanzas, making its first playoff appearance since 2020, ended the season with a 7-4 record.

"We faced a tough Lincoln team that made a lot of big plays and forced us out of our game offensively," Pirates coach Matt Forrest said. "Credit to them. They are a top-tier football team, and it showed.

"Playing in the playoffs is the expectation for our program, and now we have to scratch and claw all year in order to get back. That's the only way to continue to climb."

Lincoln (9-2) opened the scoring 24 seconds into the game, capitalizing on a Dakwon Evans fumble with Jukil Whitehead's 18-yard touchdown reception. Washington broke the game open with a pair of TD runs (51, 6 yards) in the space of six minutes in the second quarter, and a 51-yard scoring reception right out of halftime.

Lincoln will host Choctawhatchee in a regional semifinal next week.

Bradford 42, Atlantic 0

Atlantic became the fifth victim of a shutout this fall from Bradford's smothering defense.

Dae'Jon Shanks led the early scoring surge with a touchdown run and tosses to Elijah Kellum and Torin Brazell. Trejan Tyson ran for a score and a blocked a punt for the host Tornadoes (11-0), who have conceded 42 points all season.

District champion for the first time in school history, Atlantic finished with a 5-6 record.

"The experience was good for such a young team," coach Squatty Bell said. "We got to see and experience what walking into a powerhouse’s home feels like. It will make us better in the future. It gives us motivation in the offseason."
