Federer moves into Round of 16 in Miami

Switzerland's Roger Federer swept through his third-round match against Filip Krajinovic 7-5, 6-3 on Monday to advance to the round of 16 at the Miami Open in Miami Gardens, Fla.

"It was an ... intense match in the first 10 games," Federer said, per ATPtour.com. "Then I was able to pull away. I had a good 20-minute stretch where I was really able to stretch the lead, and that was key today."

Federer, seeded fourth, broke serve early in the second set and finished with 14 aces and 35 winners after struggling in his previous match, when he needed three sets to put away Moldova's Radu Albot.

Federer said he was happy with his performance against Krajinovic, a 27-year-old Serbian who reached the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., earlier this month.

"He's been winning a lot of matches here and in Indian Wells," Federer said. "I was able to serve it out perfectly. ... I think it was a good second match for me. Much more humid, so I'm happy I played through this kind of condition."

Federer is a three-time champion in Miami, winning in 2005, 2006 and 2017.

He next will meet Daniil Medvedev. The 13th-seeded Russian defeated American Reilly Opelka in a tight match, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 7-6 (0) on Monday.

Elsewhere, sixth-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa defeated Joao Sousa of Portugal 6-4, 7-6 (6). Anderson is playing in his second tournament of the season, having withdrawn from four events because of a right elbow injury.

He served 13 aces vs. Sousa and next will play Australian Jordan Thompson, who upset No. 24 seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 7-5, 7-5.

No. 14 Marco Cecchinato of Italy was the only other seeded player to fall Monday, losing 6-4, 6-4 to Belgian 18th seed David Goffin.

Eighth-seeded Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas downed Argentinian Leonardo Mayer 6-4, 6-4, 20th-seeded Canadian Denis Shapovalov dispatched Russian qualifier Andrey Rublev 6-3, 7-6 (5), and 28th-seeded American Frances Tiafoe rallied past Spaniard David Ferrer 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
