Favorite Kobe Moments and Was Trez's comment about Luka Overblown? | Dunk Bait

Happy Kobe Day, Trez's comments about Luka, who lost the NBA lottery, and the Lakers looking like the Lakers we thought they could be.

Video Transcript

LAJETHRO JENKINS: My something-- mine's upside down. Haha!

JOSIAH JOHNSON: Hey, I can't-- I can't feel my breath too well.

LAJETHRO JENKINS: Welcome to "Dunk" where we talk mostly basketball. Tonight we're talking Kobe Day, the draft lottery is in, and the Lakers are looking pretty good in the bubble the last couple of games. Montrezl versus Luka.

8/24 is Kobe Day. I don't care if the government says it's official. It's official to us. What's your best Kobe moment?

ZACH SCHWARTZ: It was a highlight of him going against the Rockets. And it was when they basically were calling Shane Battier the Kobe Stopper. And Kobe just decided that's enough of that and just, literally, lit him on fire. It was shot after shot where Shane Battier is all over Kobe like full hand in the face. And he just isn't missing. And it just kind of embodied his ability to rise to the challenge and always wanting to elevate his game. And that's my favorite Kobe moment.

LAJETHRO JENKINS: They called Ruben Patterson the Kobe Stopper too. You saw how it ended.

ZACH SCHWARTZ: Not well.

LAJETHRO JENKINS: Buckets! Not well. Not well.

JOSIAH JOHNSON: August 16, 2011. Let me set up the day for you. I got a call from my dad early in the morning. He's like, yo, man, you got to come up to the Drew League and bring the camera. Something big is about to go down. I'm just like, what? He's like, Kobe's coming through. And mind you, I'm a big-- I was a Kobe hater at that point. I'm a big LeBron fan. So I told my dad, man, whatever. I'm not even trying to do all that.

But basically, long story short, ended up grabbing the equipment, shoot up to the Drew League. Literally line out the door, everybody's waiting to see Kobe waiting in the hot summer sun for about three, four hours to get into the gym.

Kobe balled here like 45. But Kobe's team is down like 10 points with like two minutes to go in the game. Cops roll over to him like, Kobe, yo. Let's get you out of here for the crowd. You know, it's crazy. Kobe's like, no, [BLEEP] that. I got to finish the game. Kobe proceeds to engineer one of the greatest comebacks I think I've ever seen. He hits a game winner in James Harden's grill. Whole gym just goes crazy.

That moment, still honestly, I feel like God put me there for that reason to capture that moment. I just look back at that now with just a big smile on my face, man.

LAJETHRO JENKINS: My favorite Kobe moment is the final game. I know he scored 60 off 50 shots. It was the most Kobe thing ever. But for me it was like I was not a Kobe fan his entire career until the last game. I was in front of my lady. By the end of the game I'm crying into my plate of wings. You know what I mean? But it was like, you know, it was a great moment realizing like what Kobe truly meant to the game. Out of the 20 years he played I had a game where I was a Kobe fan.

ZACH SCHWARTZ: All right. So Thursday, favorite time of the year, favorite holiday was Thursday. It's the annual time of the year where Knicks fans, their hopes come crashing down as they don't win the lottery. I look forward to it every [BLEEP] year.

[LAUGHTER]

ZACH SCHWARTZ: I was pissed that the Warriors are going to have another high draft pick and flip that.

LAJETHRO JENKINS: I have no real takeaway. All I really care about is where LaMelo goes. I do not want him going to the Timberwolves. I want to see him do good the league. I watched him play live. I think he's incredible. I hate the Warriors. And I don't want to see them getting any better. But I think he'd be great on the Warriors as a backup on a great team, with great chemistry, a great coach.

JOSIAH JOHNSON: I think Steph and Klay would be great for his game. And I would love to see a lot of those Warrior fans who were bashing LaVar Ball not have to embrace LaVar to their hearts. OK? And I think Melo's game is really similar to Klay and Steph in terms of his approach. And he's pulling it from half court, pointing, calling his shot since high school. So it's not really anything new to him. So I think playing with those dudes and that swag would really be great.

ZACH SCHWARTZ: There's a lot of bad teams that he would go to if he falls past two. And even if he goes at one I don't want to watch him be all clogged up having to run with Karl-Anthony Towns. Like, no, we're wasting Karl-Anthony there. I don't need this, please.

JOSIAH JOHNSON: Jordan will ruin him. Oh.

[LAUGHTER]

LAJETHRO JENKINS: Right, right.

The Lakers are looking better. They were looking-- we were talking a lot of [BLEEP]. How do you all feel about how they've been doing as of the last two games?

JOSIAH JOHNSON: Look, I think the Lakers have shown what it is, who they are, you know, what they're about. You have people like Charles Barkley saying they were going to get swept by Dame.

LAJETHRO JENKINS: Oh!

JOSIAH JOHNSON: Not on my watch! Today is Kobe Day. Obviously, Lakers are going to have a lot of emotion. They're rocking the Kobe jerseys. The last time-- the last team they played after Kobe's tragic passing was the Blazers. The Blazers whacked that cheek. So I don't know if the Lakers are going to win this game. I know they're going to win the series. I think there's going to be a lot of pressure on them to win this game. Hopefully they rise up to the moment. Do it for Mom. But do it for Gigi. But I think, ultimately, winning the series is all that matters. And I can see them having a little bit of a slump tonight.

ZACH SCHWARTZ: I was so worried going to this series. And I was hoping that Dame would fade. And he hasn't. Even despite hurting the finger he still went off the other night. But I got to tip my hat. You know, LeBron and AD have both risen to the occasion.

But I want to tip my hat to Frank Vogel because I think the changes he made in the setup-- maybe it wasn't even a setup. Maybe it was just him saying like, hey, idiots, stop shooting 3-pointers, please. Because the big change, and seeing them go, and just dominate in the paint, and the way the offense is actually moving now it looks great. And I think being able to make some changes like that and that kind of stuff is what gives me hope with this team.

LAJETHRO JENKINS: Game 3, Bron was killing. 39 points. And it didn't look like he really push the gas for real. He didn't really press the Bron button. It was an easy 39 it looked like. But what I've really liked is I like Caruso and KCP on the defensive end. And also, KCP has been hitting his open 3s. And we needed somebody to step up. What teams are you all scared of when it comes to our Lakers?

JOSIAH JOHNSON: I mean, always the Clippers. But other than that, there's no real mortal human being I feel like that can get on LeBron's level. LeBron is all conditions. He's built for whatever.

LAJETHRO JENKINS: What about those Raptors? They got three people that can go for 20 or 30 a game.

JOSIAH JOHNSON: Woo!

LAJETHRO JENKINS: You know I'm saying? Siakam is great defensively. Lowry is great defensively. The whole team. They got Nick Nurse coaching them, Coach of the Year. They look good, man.

ZACH SCHWARTZ: I'll say this. I don't-- no one in the West scares me. But you know, losing to the Clippers would hurt a lot so that scares me. Like emotionally, the trauma that that would cause to me, that scares me.

LAJETHRO JENKINS: Your therapist will be earning their money.

ZACH SCHWARTZ: Yeah, there would be a lot of checks getting sent to my therapist if we lose to the Clippers.

LAJETHRO JENKINS: So Montrezl yelled something to Luka that some people found offensive. He apologized about it before the game. But was it a big deal in the first place? Or was it overblown? It seems like people were reaching.

ZACH SCHWARTZ: I didn't bother me. It's like, I've hooped. I've had that happen. I'm sure Luka-- like, Luka Doncic has played in insane leagues in Europe and heard, I'm sure, all sorts of crazy sort of things. You just sort of like, who cares?

JOSIAH JOHNSON: When he said, I'm looking like, Trez, who are you talking to? You better not be talking to Luka. That's what I was more offended by. You better put some respect on Luka.

LAJETHRO JENKINS: Luka got the whole all the Clippers scared. That's why he's talking to Luka. Luka-- that's a sign of respect if we're being honest.

ZACH SCHWARTZ: But as everybody has pointed out on the internet you can't really compare them. Everybody's like, oh, what if a white person said whatever. But it's like we don't live in a country where things are equivalent. So we can't really flip it and go apples to apples with that thing.

LAJETHRO JENKINS: I mean, white boy has never signified anything other than a white boy. It's descriptive. You know what I'm saying? It's not used pejoratively like black boy is. Black boy is used-- you know what I'm saying? When you don't want to use the n-word. You feel me? When there's different power dynamics there's different rules. You know I mean? And that's why we need to fight for equality. You know what I'm saying? So I think it kind of highlights what the NBA is trying to do. Because if you call-- I mean, if you call somebody a white boy it means they're just a white boy. That white boy can shoot. That white boy got from bunnies. You know what I'm saying? Luka definitely doesn't care about that. Most people don't especially if you played basketball before.

All right. That's the show. I'm the LaJethro Jenkins.

JOSIAH JOHNSON: King Josiah 54.

ZACH SCHWARTZ: I'm Zach Schwartz.

LAJETHRO JENKINS: You all stay safe. Wear a mask. My-- mine is upside down. Haha!

JOSIAH JOHNSON: Hey, yo. I can't feel my breath till we're too low.

LAJETHRO JENKINS: There we go.

Brush your teeth!
