FAMU basketball sweeps Alabama State, softball gets second win of season | Rattler Roundup

Sydney Hendrix secured a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds to help the Florida A&M women's basketball team defeat the Alabama State Hornets 70-66 at home Saturday.

The Rattlers (8-17, 7-7) had three players score in double figures, led by Hendrix, who secured a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Olivia Delancy added 16 points and Ahriahna Grizzle helped out with 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

FAMU out-rebounded Alabama State 43-30 in Saturday's game, led by Hendrix's 11 boards. The Rattlers also grabbed 16 offensive rebounds and scored 16 second chance points.

FAMU did a great job disrupting Alabama State shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Hendrix's two rejections led the way individually for the Rattlers.

FAMU kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 16-15.

FAMU chipped away at that deficit and built a 30-29 lead before going on a 6-0 run to increase its lead to 36-29. The Hornets cut into that lead, but the Rattlers still enjoyed a 38-32 advantage heading into halftime. FAMU dominated in the paint, scoring 16 of its 23 points close to the basket.

After intermission, FAMU held on to its advantage and owned a 52-50 lead heading into the fourth quarter. FAMU played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.

FAMU kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Hendrix's jumper, to grow the lead to 61-52 with 6:12 to go in the contest. The Hornets narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Rattlers still held on for the 70-66 win. FAMU took advantage of seven Alabama State turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.

The FAMU men's basketball team kept Alabama State to just 15 percent from deep in a 3-for-20 shooting performance on the way to a 73-65 victory over the Hornets at home Saturday.

The Rattlers (5-20, 3-11) had three players score in double figures, led by Keith Lamar, who had 22 points and two blocks. Shannon Grant added 15 points and six rebounds and Jalen Speer helped out with 12 points.

FAMU did a great job disrupting Alabama State shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Matthew Webster led the way individually for the Rattlers with two rejections.

FAMU started out the scoring by going on an 8-0 run, culminating in a three from Morrell Schramm, to take an early lead with 17:35 left in the first half. The Rattlers then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 32-26.

FAMU narrowed its deficit to 44-42 before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Lamar's jumper, to seize a 52-44 lead with 8:11 to go in the contest. The Rattlers held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 73-65 win.

MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA ― The FAMU Rattlers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to an 8-2 win against the Southern Jaguars on Saturday.

Freshman Zoryana Hughes (0-0) got the win for FAMU (2-12). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on two hits, allowing four walks and striking out five.

In the batter's box, the Rattlers were led by freshman Aniya Canty, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a home run and three RBI. Junior Kayla Alexandre compiled a standout day at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk and an RBI. Junior Samantha Smith also contributed for FAMU, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

The Rattlers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Senior Nyomi Jones came across to score the lone run of the inning for FAMU and get them on the board.

The Jaguars failed to push any runs across before the Rattlers offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. FAMU scored three times in the frame, including back-to-back homers from Alexandre and Canty, which brought the Rattlers lead to 4-0.

FAMU kept Southern without a run before building their lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning.

FAMU held the Jaguars scoreless before their offense got in gear the next inning. The Rattlers recorded a run when freshman Delacia DeLeslin drew a walk that scored sophomore Neriah Lee, bringing the score to 6-0 in favor of FAMU.

The Rattlers kept Southern without a run before building on their lead to 8-0 in the seventh inning. FAMU picked up two runs when a single from Canty scored sophomore Kayla Aldridge and junior Brianna Duggins. Southern put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Rattlers still coasted to the 8-2 win.

After an opening win, FAMU baseball fell in its second game of the Andre Dawson Classic.

The Rattlers (3-3) narrowly lost to the Prairie View A&M 5-4 at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex in Vero Beach.

FAMU’s loss comes a day after completing a comeback for a walk-off 7-6 victory against Grambling State.

Next, FAMU will play Southern in the Andre Dawson Classic’s finale.

The first pitch of FAMU-Southern will be thrown at 2 p.m.
