Former New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler admitted Thursday to reckless driving following his arrest in North Providence in March for suspected drunken driving.

Butler, 34, pleaded no contest before District Court Magistrate Joseph P. Ippolito Jr. to a lesser charge of reckless driving as a resolution to the case.

On March 29, Butler's license was suspended for 40 days at the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal.

Early morning traffic stop

Butler was arrested by North Providence police after an officer spotted the Mercedes-Benz he was driving at 3:22 a.m. stopped and blocking traffic on Mineral Spring Avenue, according to police.

A police officer said he smelled a strong odor of alcohol on Butler's breath, that his speech was slurred and his eyes were bloodshot and watery.
