How have ex-Jaguar quarterbacks performed against their old team? Pretty well in recent years

When Gardner Minshew starts for the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, it will mark the ninth time in team history that an ex-Jaguar has started against his former team.

Minshew played for the Jaguars in 2019 and 2020 before being traded to Philadelphia before the start of the 2021 season. He played against the Jaguars in the opening game at Indianapolis, coming in for three plays and throwing two incomplete passes after Anthony Richardson was injured.

QB history lesson: A rundown of Jaguars quarterbacks, from Beuerlein to Minshew

Blaine Gabbert, who played for the Jaguars from 2011-2013, throws a pass under pressure from the Jags' Dante Fowler in a 2017 game in Glendale, Ariz. Gabbert led two fourth-quarter scoring drives to beat the Jaguars 27-24 in that game.

With Richardson's shoulder injury last week, Minshew is once again a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Ex-Jaguar quarterbacks are 6-2 against their old team as starters, the six victories coming in succession since Steve Beuerlein started and lost games for Carolina against the Jags in 1996 and 1999.

The most recent victory by an ex-Jags quarterback was by Blaine Gabbert in 2018, in Jacksonville while playing for the Tennessee Titans. Gabbert only had nine plays before Malik Jackson knocked him out of the game with a hit that was ruled helmet-to-helmet and Marcus Mariota finished a 9-6 victory.

Ex-Jag quarterbacks are 3-1 as starters in Jacksonville.

Overall, ex-Jaguar quarterbacks have completed 61.7 percent of their passes and combined for a passer rating of 92.4. They collectively have thrown for 1,617 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Jags defenses have at least gotten after them, with 17 sacks in the seven games — however, nine of them were in two games against Beuerlein.

Here are the ex-Jag quarterbacks and their game-by-game performance against their old team as starters — with one key exception at the end:

Steve Beuerlein

With the Jaguars: 1995.

Against the Jaguars: Beuerlein, the Jaguars' first starting quarterback, lost two games as a starter for the Carolina Panthers, 24-14 in 1996 in Jacksonville and 22-20 in 1999 at Carolina. He threw for 435 yards and four TDs. Three of the TD passes came in the 1999 game.

Mark Brunell

With the Jaguars: 1995-2003.

Against the Jaguars: Brunell thew a 68-yard TD pass to Santana Moss in overtime to beat the visiting Jaguars 36-30 in 2006 with Washington. Brunell was 18 of 30 for 329 yards and three TDs in the game.

Against the Jaguars: Johnson threw for 238 yards and a touchdown in a 13-10 victory for Buffalo in 2001, in Jacksonville. Tied 10-10, Johnson guided the Bills on a drive that ended in a 46-yard field goal by Jake Arians with 1:03 left in the game. Johnson completed 3 of 3 passes and ran for 12 yards on the drive.

Jamie Martin

With the Jaguars: 1998-2002.

Against the Jaguars: Martin threw a 19-yard TD pass to Steven Jackson with 12:45 left in the game for the winning score in a 24-21 victory for the host St. Louis Rams in 2005. He was 13 of 21 for 200 yards and two TDs.

Jay Fiedler

Against the Jaguars: Fiedler was 14 of 27 for 147 yards for the Miami Dolphins in a 24-10 victory in Jacksonville in 2003. He also played against the Jags for the New York Jets in 2005, completing 2 of 3 passes for 29 yards in a 26-20 loss.

Blaine Gabbert

With the Jaguars: 2011-2013.

Against the Jaguars: Gabbert led the Arizona Cardinals to a 27-24 victory over the visiting Jaguars in 2017, breaking the Jags' four-game winning streak.

Gabbert threw a 52-yard TD pass to Jaron Brown with 9:07 left for a 24-17 lead, Blake Bortles tied the score on a 17-yard TD less than two minutes later. The Cardinals got the ball back with 16 seconds left on their own 39-yard line and Gabbert threw two pass completions to the Jaguars 39 and Phil Dawson kicked a 57-yard field goal on the game's final play to win.

Gabbert started at Jacksonville when he played for the Tennessee Titans the following season but was knocked out of the game after throwing only one pass and taking nine snaps on a hit by Malik Jackson that was flagged for helmet-to-helmet contact. Marcus Mariotta came in for Gabbert and led the Titans to a 9-6 victory. Gabbert is the only ex-Jaguar to start for two teams against the Jags.

Chad Henne

With the Jaguars: 2012-2017.

Against the Jaguars: His only appearance against his old team came in the 2022 playoffs for Kansas City. With Patrick Mahomes going to the locker room to treat an ankle injury, Henne guided the Chiefs on a cautious but effective 98-yard TD drive in the second quarter. He only threw for 23 yards (on 5 of 7) but one pass covered 1 yard to Travis Kelce in the end zone to give Kansas City a 17-7 lead in a game the Chiefs eventually won 27-20.
