England vs Bangladesh LIVE: Cricket World Cup 2023 result and reaction as Jos Buttler’s side bounce back

England put their opening-day defeat against New Zealand firmly behind them when they beat Bangladesh by 137 runs in the Cricket World Cup in Dharamshala.

The defending champions were utterly humbled by the Kiwis in a nine-wicket defeat that left viewers stunned, and even more problematically, dealt a significant blow to the side’s net run rate.

The Himalayan foothills provided a stunning backdrop to the occasion, and despite pre-match discussions being dominated by concerns around the nature of the pitch, it did not have any significant effect on the performance. Speaking to reporters on the eve of the clash, Jos Buttler described the pitch as “poor”, claiming it was different to the one used when he played at the same ground during the IPL, but England emerged victorious and having boosted their net run rate.

The pitch was also a cause for concern when Afghanistan played against Bangladesh there, as Mujeeb Ur Rahman jarred his knee in the sandy turf diving for a ball, and head coach and former England batter Jonathan Trott said players were “unsure” over their footing.

Dawid Malan and Reece Topley restore faith but England still lacking in one key area

16:25 , Mike Jones

After a nine-wicket humiliation at the hands of New Zealand in the Cricket World Cup opener, England needed a response. They got it in the form of a dominant 137-run victory over Bangladesh in Dharamshala, but the game should have been killed off far earlier.

Having been put in to bat, England set the ideal platform. Jonny Bairstow hit 52 and Dawid Malan played expertly from the outset en route to a match-winning 140 from 107. Joe Root, who had been the one bright spark against New Zealand, shone again with 82 from 68.

But the cracks appeared once the top order had been dispatched. England were 296 for two in the 40th over, and with the prospect of 10 more to come, former captain Eoin Morgan spoke positively with the expectation that the side could reach 400 for the first time in World Cups. Then the wickets started to tumble.

From 296 for two, England slid consistently to 362 for nine in the final over, relying for a second successive match on the last pair to get them over the line and avoid being bowled out. Ultimately it did not affect the result, but against a higher-ranked side, it could prove the difference.

Some NFL players have expressed interest in playing for the U.S. flag football team if the sport is included in the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles, an NFL executive told Reuters.

On Monday, LA28 organisers formally asked that flag football for both the men’s and women’s competitions as well as four other sports be added to the event.

Final approval of the programme is expected to come when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) meets later this month in Mumbai.

Virat Kohli says he feels ‘awkward’ playing in front of pavilion named after him

15:30 , Mike Jones

Virat Kohli has said he will feel “awkward” playing in front of the pavilion named after him in India’s next World Cup match in Delhi.

The star batsman was referring to the venue for his country’s next game in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, in comments made to his team mate KL Rahul.

Team India are currently in Delhi, where Kohli grew up and embarked on his journey as a cricketer, for their second match in the World Cup against Afghanistan on Wednesday.

Pakistani cricket presenter Zainab Abbas leaves India amid backlash over ‘derogatory’ comments

15:22 , Mike Jones

Pakistani presenter Zainab Abbas has left India after facing backlash over “derogatory and provocative” social media posts that a local Indian lawyer claimed were made by her against his country.

Abbas, 35, was part of the official digital team covering the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

The Pakistani presenter’s departure comes on the heels of an earlier controversy in which Pakistan’s cricket team had not received their visas until the last minute. India and Pakistan share hostile relations and have stopped playing bilateral cricket matches unless they are part of a larger multi-nation tournament.

Jos Buttler makes concerning claim over ‘poor’ World Cup outfield for England’s clash with Bangladesh

15:15 , Mike Jones

Jos Buttler was concerned by the “poor” outfield at the Dharamshala cricket stadium ahead of England’s second Cricket World Cup match against Bangladesh on Tuesday and insisted it was different to when he played there during the Indian Premier League.

England will be looking to bounce back from their dismal hammering at the hands of New Zealand in the tournament’s opening match in Ahmedabad, where the defending champions were beaten by nine wickets.

The HPCA Stadium has one of the most beautiful settings, nestled in the Himalayan foothills, and is visually stunning, but it was the scene of a potentially nasty injury earlier in the tournament. Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman dived for a ball on Saturday against Bangladesh and his knee got stuck in the turf, spraying soil into the air.

England’s Reece Topley speaking on Sky Sports:

15:08 , Mike Jones

“It’s a step in the right direction after New Zealand, which didn’t go to plan. It’s nice to play with a similar blueprint. Afghanistan in Delhi is likely to be more like their conditions than ours.

“If you’re going about it in the right way, when you’ve got talented players in the changing room, hopefully you’re on the right end of results. If you’re on the front foot, you can have an advantage straight away.

“The beauty of this World Cup is that different pitches will pose different challenges. There might be a different line-up in Delhi. It’s a squad effort. Everyone wants to play. When we are left out, it is how you respond. Getting those early wickets makes you feel like you belong again.”

More from Jos Buttler

15:00 , Mike Jones

“I think you’re always looking for the perfect performance, the turnover from 30-40 we scored about 100 runs. That 30-40 period was very smart. There’s not many times you come off and don’t think there’s many areas to improve which is great.

“It’s going to be one of the challenges of the tournament, reading the pitch well and our options. The guys on the bench are great, we’ve got different options.

“Reece Topley was great today coming in and got big early wickets in the powerplay.”

Reaction from England captain Jos Buttler

14:52 , Mike Jones

“I think it was a really good performance to bounce back from a disappointing first game and we still feel there are areas to improve.

“I thought it was a fantastic score on that pitch, it got harder towards the end but we could’ve got more at the back end. Some big partnerships at the start, excellent from Dawid Malan to take a lead.”

Dawid Malan masterclass gets England’s World Cup campaign up and running

14:45 , Mike Jones

An outstanding century from Dawid Malan and Reece Topley’s eye-catching return put England’s World Cup defence back on track as they hammered Bangladesh by 137 runs in Dharamshala.

The 2019 champions were bruised by a thumping loss to New Zealand in the tournament opener but banked a handsome win of their own to cap their visit to the outer ranges of the Himalayas.

Malan was the architect, rolling out a career-best 140 in 107 balls as he carried England to 364 for nine with a fourth century in his last nine innings.

At one stage they would have backed themselves to post 400, but a flurry of wickets at the back end kept them to a less flashy figure.

Reaction from Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan:

14:39 , Mike Jones

“It was colder weather than the last game, you could even see the snow. That could have helped our bowlers, but we didn’t start well enough. If you give them a sniff, they will always come hard.

“We had a good plan, but we couldn’t execute. The ball swung nicely for five or six overs, but we couldn’t land the ball often enough.

“They could have scored 380 or 390, but we restricted them well. 330 we might have fancied our chances, but we needed a good start and didn’t get that.

“It’s a long tournament and we can’t put our heads down. We have to move on and think all of the positives we have been doing, focus on one game at a time.”

More from Dawid Malan

14:33 , Mike Jones

Dawid Malan paid tribute to batting partner, Joe Root, who scored 82 runs and was part of a 150 run partnership with the left-handed opener.

“When you’ve got Joe Root at number three, it allows us to play with freedom,” said Malan, “Maybe a bit of hunger, I’m desperate to do well in this format and prove a point that I deserve to be in there.”

England move up tournament table

14:27 , Mike Jones

This victory was much needed for Jos Buttler’s team after their opening round defeat to New Zealand. The manner of victory, by 137 runs, has also helped rescue their net run-rate which is now back into the positive realm.

England are now fifth instead of 10th and jump ahead of today’s opponents Bangladesh.

Dawid Malan awarded player of the match

14:23 , Mike Jones

England batter and player of the match Dawid Malan: “I’m going to say experience if anything. It’s nice to contribute, it’s been a long journey to get here. I don’t know what it’s down to but hopefully, it continues.

“I think sometimes, people create a narrative of something that isn’t there to support their writing or views, it has always been there, sometimes you play good shots, sometimes you play bad shots. It is about cashing in when you can.”

Dawid Malan is England’s oldest centurion in Cricket World Cup after explosive knock in Dharamshala

14:19 , Mike Jones

Star batsman Dawid Malan has become the oldest England player to score a Cricket World Cup century after his explosive knock againstBangladesh.

Malan, at the age of 36 years and 37 days, struck five sixes and 16 fours in his knock of 140 off 107 deliveries as England put up 364 for 9 in 50 overs, their third-highest total in a 50-over World Cup.

The record for being the oldest centurion in a World Cup among England cricketers previously belonged to former captain Graham Gooch, who scored a World Cup hundred at the age of 34 years and 105 days during the 1987 edition of the marquee tournament.

England beat Bangladesh by 137 runs

14:15 , Sonia Twigg

Jos Buttler: “I think a really good performance, we bounced back from a disappointing first game.

“I think just the back end of the innings we would have liked to get a few more. That’s the one area I think we could improve because the opening partnership was brilliant and then Malan and Root was excellent.

“I think you’re always looking for that perfect performance, I think those 10 overs from 30 to 40 we probably scored 100 runs.”

England beat Bangladesh by 137 runs

14:13 , Sonia Twigg

Shakib Al Hasan: “I thought it was a good toss to win, last night there was some rain, there was some help for the bowlers, but I thought we didn’t start well enough.

“We came back strongly in the last 10 overs I would say.

“We had a very good plan, the plan we could not execute. Once they got the momentum they never looked back.”

England beat Bangladesh by 137 runs

14:06 , Sonia Twigg

Dawid Malan on reaching his highest ODI score: “Experience if anything, but it’s nice to contribute, there’s been a long journey to get to this stage so to get here is fantastic and to help England win a game is great.

“I think sometimes create a narrative that isn’t there just to justify their own writing or views but it (how I play spin) has always been there.”

On getting in and going big: “A bit of hunger, I’m desperate to do well this tournament and prove people wrong.”

Wicket! Taskin out for 15 b Curran - England win by 137 runs

14:01 , Sonia Twigg

That first ball from Curran has hit the stumps but not dislodged the bail! Amazing! Even Michael Atherton and Eoin Morgan on commentary are speechless.

That has hit leg stump hard!

But the next ball has gone straight into middle and the bails have come off. A middle stump yorker and England win by 137 runs.

Bangladesh 227-9 (48) Mustafizur 3, Taskin 15, Wood 1-29 (10) need 138 from 12

14:00 , Sonia Twigg

This will be the 48th over of the innings and Wood’s last, but can he get the wicket to end proceedings before the final over?

There’s two flashes for singles, but the slower ball goes by without an edge.

Bangladesh 225-9 (47) Taskin 14, Mustafizur 2, Curran 0-47 (7) need 140 runs from 18

13:55 , Sonia Twigg

There are just four overs left but England will want to bowl Bangladesh out here.

Taskin has gone for a big heave against Curran and completely missed the ball, but it was outside the off stump.

Bangladesh 221-9 (46) Taskin 13, Mustafizur 0, Wood 1-27 (9) need 144 runs from 24

13:50 , Sonia Twigg

Just one left for England now, there is no chance of Bangladesh victory and Buttler’s side are closing in on one here

Wicket! Shoriful out for 12 bowled Wood - Bangladesh 221-9

13:48 , Sonia Twigg

Mark Wood returns, he has bowled quickly today, but does not yet have a wicket.

But he has one now, the change of angle and a quick straight delivery is enough for Shoriful! 91mph and crashed into the stumps.

Bangladesh 220-8 (45) Taskin 12, Shoriful 8, Curran 0-40 (6) need 145 run from 30

13:45 , Sonia Twigg

Curran is back into the attack to try and wrap this up, but he starts his sixth over with a wide.

Shoriful drives for four, Rashid gives chase but can’t stop it crossing the boundary...he thought about diving but maybe the issues with the turf were just in the back of his mind.

And there’s another boundary down the ground from the final ball of the over.

Bangladesh 209-8 (44) Taskin 12, Shoriful 3, Livingstone 1-13 (3) need 156 runs from 36

13:39 , Sonia Twigg

After just poking around for singles, Taskin has launched Livingstone for six! That has travelled well with a good connection.

Bangladesh 201-8 (43) Taskin 5, Shoriful 2, Rashid 1-42 (10)

13:36 , Sonia Twigg

Rashid is all bowled out and Bangladesh do bring up their 200, they have dug in here after the early wickets, the result was never really under threat but it has showed a level of determination.

Bangladesh 198-8 (42) Shoriful 2, Taskin 2, Livingstone 1-5 (2) need 167 from 48

13:34 , Sonia Twigg

Livingstone back on from the other end after striking with his first ball and England just need two more wickets to tie everything up here.

Wicket! Mahedi out for 14! b Rashid - Bangladesh 195-8

13:30 , Sonia Twigg

Spin from both ends now, and Rashid has his breakthrough!

Mahedi played for the googly and it went straight on into the stumps.

Bangladesh 191-7 (40) Taskin 1, Mahedi 10, Livingstone 1-2 (1) need 174 runs from 60

13:27 , Sonia Twigg

Taskin Ahmed will come in at number nine, Livingstone might have had to wait until the 40th over to have a bowl, Rashid had bowled eight already, but he has the wicket with one that just bounced up a bit more than expected.

The next two fly past the edge of the left hander, but it won’t be a wicket maiden and he is driven for a single with the fourth ball.

Wicket! Hridoy out for 39 ct Buttler b Livingstone - Bangladesh 189-7

13:24 , Sonia Twigg

Livingstone strikes first ball with an expert leg break! That’s just what England were looking for!

The first ball is edged behind and Hridoy is out for 39 from 61!

Bangladesh 189-6 (39) Hridoy 39, Mahedi 9, Rashid 0-35 (8) need 176 runs from 66

13:23 , Sonia Twigg

The googly has done the batter but Mahedi survives as it goes past the stumps.

The next one is defended strongly off the front foot.

Topley will chase another that is hit up into the air, but he wasn’t close enough to dive for the catch.

Bangladesh 186-6 (38) Hridoy 38, Mahedi 7, Wood 0-26 (8) need 179 runs from 72

13:19 , Sonia Twigg

Hridoy finds the large gap between cover and mid on to score a boundary as Wood continues to bowl, but he is not looking comfortable on the walk back to his mark and is definitely taking his time over it.

With a wide first ball that will be a long over from Wood, and it went for 6.

Bangladesh 179-6 (37) Hridoy 33, Mahedi 7, Rashid 0-32 (7) need 185 runs to win

13:14 , Sonia Twigg

Rashid is back into the attack, England need four more wickets.

The slip is in and under the lights England will be hoping he can find something here.

And Topley has dropped Mahedi! It was shin-height and straight to him and the England bowler has to do better there and hold on to that.

Bangladesh 176-6 (36) Hridoy 32, Mahedi 4, Wood 0-20 (7) need 189 runs to win

13:11 , Sonia Twigg

Wood will bowl his 7th, still in the hunt for his first wicket, he goes wide to try and create the angle, but the batters are just batting the ball away for singles.

Just two from that over, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he took a break there, he looked a bit tired.

Bangladesh 174-6 (35) Hridoy 31, Mahedi 3, Topley 4-43 (10) need 191 runs to win

13:07 , Sonia Twigg

Wood is having to do four balls in a row of fielding after his over of 90mph.

Five runs from the first 3 balls of the over, but he can’t get a five-fer as he finishes his 10th over after an excellent performance of four for 43.

Bangladesh 169-6 (34) Hridoy 27, Mahedi 2, Wood 0-18 (6) need 196 runs to win

13:04 , Sonia Twigg

Let’s have a look at the speeds from this Mark Wood over:

First ball: 92.6mph

2nd: 92.3mph

3rd: 92.3mph

4th: 91.9mph

5th: 91.7mph

6th: 92 mph

Bangladesh 168-6 (33) Hridoy 26, Mahedi 2, Topley 4-38 (9) need 197 runs to win

12:59 , Sonia Twigg

Topley is one wicket away from a five-fer here, something he will want to achieve after missing out on both the 2019 World Cup and the T20 in 2022 through injury.

Dot balls first up, Bangladesh are not going for this, maybe they two have one eye on net run rate.

Bangladesh 166-6 (32) Hridoy 25, Mahedi 1, Wood 0-17 (5) need 199 runs to win

12:53 , Sonia Twigg

Wood is back, England are looking to get this over with as soon as possible and restore at net run rate which has seen them rooted to the foot of the table in the tournament before this match.

Wicket! Mushfiqur out for 51! Bangladesh 164-6 (31) Hridoy 24, Topley 4-36 (8) need 201 runs to win

12:48 , Sonia Twigg

Topley has not looked anywhere near as threatening with the older ball than he did at the top of the order, but he has been one of the least expensive bowlers for England.

If Bangladesh go for it England may have their chance, but at the moment they look okay and could drag it out.

But that’s the breakthrough! It was a poor error from Mushfiqur who had offered nothing until then! and he plays it straight to Adil Rashid at deep third.

Bangladesh 160-5 (30) Hridoy 21, Mushfiqur 50, Rashid 0-28 (6) need 205 runs to win

12:44 , Sonia Twigg

The Bangladesh batters have kept rotating the strike against Rashid, but haven’t really put the pressure back on him, England don’t need to do anything different - unless they want to try and improve the net run rate.

50 for Mushfiqur! Bangladesh 160-5

12:43 , Sonia Twigg

A good 50 for Mushfiqur who has had to work hard here, from 61 deliveries.

Bangladesh 155-5 (29) Hridoy 18, Mushfiqur 48, Topley 3-32 (7) need 210 runs to win

12:40 , Sonia Twigg

Bangladesh are far below the required run rate which has crept up to almost 10 runs an over.

But that one is a gift from Topley, too close to Hridoy’s pads and just flicked away for four.

Bangladesh 148-5 (28) Hridoy 13, Mushfiqur 46, Rashid 0-23 (5) need 217 runs to win

12:37 , Sonia Twigg

Bangladesh are in the hunt for every single run, turning a one into two the first ball of the over.

They have just started to drop below the run rate on the match up, but crucially have lost four wickets, and that’s another one!

Rashid traps Hridoy lbw on the crease, the batter reviews immediately and overturns the on-field decision showing the ball went into the pads off the bat.

Bangladesh 144-5 (27) Hridoy 10, Mushfiqur 45, Topley 3-25 (6) need 221 runs to win

12:32 , Sonia Twigg

Topley who already has three wickets - which he took for just five runs - at the start of the match has come back on to find another breakthrough.

He’s gone round the wicket to change the angle with the lack of swing at this stage compared to the start of the innings.

And Mushfiqur hits a lovely drive for four off the final ball.

Bangladesh 135-5 (25) Hridoy 8, Mushfiqur 38, Woakes 2-47 (8) need 230 runs to win

12:25 , Sonia Twigg

Woakes has found his line and length, and has turned to the slower ball, it’s time for all the variations, and it results in just the two runs from the over.

Bangladesh 133-5 (24) Hridoy 6, Mushfiqur 38, Rashid 0-17 (3) need 232 runs to win

12:21 , Sonia Twigg

A very good over from Rashid, the Bangladesh batters just struggling to find the boundaries here to put the pressure back on England, but they have dug in and kept going having lost four early wickets.

Bangladesh 129-5 (23) Hridoy 3, Mushfiqur 37, Woakes 2-45 (7) need 234 runs to win

12:18 , Sonia Twigg

After striking in the last over the batters have done well against Woakes, just kept rotating the strike without taking any risks.

Bangladesh 126-5 (22) Hridoy 2, Mushfiqur 35, Rashid 0-15 (2) need 239 runs to win

12:15 , Sonia Twigg

That wicket was just the breakthrough England would have wanted, he had looked so strong at the crease and firmly put the pressure back on the bowlers and in particular Woakes who he took for 12 in the first innings of the match.

But now Adil Rashid gets to have a go at the new batter.

Wicket! Das out for 76! Bangladesh 121-5(21) Mushfiqur 32, Woakes 2-42 (6)

12:11 , Sonia Twigg

Another change from Buttler with Woakes returning after his opening five-over spell.

His first over went for 12 but he has bowled a better line since and was rewarded with the fourth wicket.

A slower ball has done for Das, he chases it and edges behind to Buttler. That is a massive breakthrough for England

Bangladesh 116-4 (20) Das 74, Mushfiqur 29, Rashid 0-10 (1) need 249 runs to win

12:06 , Sonia Twigg

And it will be Adil Rashid, Das just defends the first ball back to the bowler for no run.

A tight over from Rashid, until the last delivery which Das dispatched for 6 to move into the 70s.

Bangladesh 106-4 (19) Das 66, Mushfiqur 27, Curran 0-34 (5) need 259 runs to win

12:02 , Sonia Twigg

Bangladesh bring up the 50 partnership and 100 with a fuller delivery sent to the extra cover boundary by Mushfiqur.

And another boundary with a bit of width, again drive through the covers.

10 off that over from Curran and I wonder if we’ll see some spin soon.

Bangladesh 96-4 (18) Das 65, Mushfiqur 18, Wood 0-16 (4) need 269 runs to win

11:58 , Sonia Twigg

Wood and Curran have not been going for a lot of runs here, but they haven’t found the breakthroughs either.

Three from that last over from Wood.

Bangladesh 93-4 (17) Das 64, Mushfiqur 16, Curran 0-24 (4) need 272 runs to win

11:52 , Sonia Twigg

This pair have looked comfortable against Curran, especially guiding the ball towards third man, and are cutting comfortably.

Bangladesh 86-4 (16) Das 60, Mushfiqur 14, Wood 0-12 (3) need 278 runs to win

11:49 , Sonia Twigg

Wood’s first ball went for 4, the first boundary in quite a few overs, but he has reached some incredible speeds here, with all of his speeds above 149.1kph or 92.5 mph.

Bangladesh 81-4 (15) Das 59, Mushifiqur 9, Curran 0-18 (3) need 284 runs to win

11:41 , Sonia Twigg

It might be a case soon of how can England get these wickets as quickly as possible due to their exceptionally poor run rate from the first match against New Zealand.

Ahead of the match it stood at the worst in the tournament, and England will want to rectify that ahead of the later group stages where it could play a part in semi-final qualification.

Just having a look at England’s fixtures and they have no back to back games in any one city, every one is in a different place and that will also take its toll.

Bangladesh 74-4 (14) Das 56, Mushifiqur 6, Wood 0-6 (2) need 291 runs to win

11:36 , Sonia Twigg

Wood back into the attack and Bangladesh are just struggling to score a little bit.

Three runs again from the over.

Bangladesh 71-4 (13) Das 54, Mushifiqur 5, Curran 0-11 (2) need 294 runs to win

11:32 , Sonia Twigg

Das and Mushifiqur have just knocked the ball around for singles off Curran, in order to take the game deep these two will have to stay at the crease.

Three runs from the over, with Curran using the slower ball a few times.

Bangladesh 67-4 (12) Das 51, Mushifiqur 4, Wood 0-3 (1) need 297 runs to win

11:28 , Sonia Twigg

Mark Wood will be brought on to bowl his express pace, he has not bowled much since the Ashes, but he starts with a dot ball at 90mph...

Das’ half-century came from 40 deliveries and he had an explosive start with 12 in the first over.

Three runs from Wood’s first over.

Litton Das 50! Bangladesh 65-4 (11) Das 50, Mushifiqur 3, Curran 0-9 (1)

11:22 , Sonia Twigg

After Woakes’ breakthrough, Buttler has decided he will have a breather and hands the ball to Sam Curran.

It might be a great idea, as Bangladesh have struggled against the left-handed Topley so far already.

Das brings up his 50 with the final ball of the over and he has looked untroubled while all the wickets have tumbled, a great innings from the opening batter.

Bangladesh 55-4 (10) Das 44, Mushifiqur 1, Topley 3-12 (5) need 308 to win

11:18 , Sonia Twigg

Mushifiqur off the mark with a boundary but Topley has continued to bowl expertly here.

Das missed a big heave into the leg side but follows it up with a six for the last ball of the powerplay, fine leg was up and it was dispatched over his head and over the rope.

Bangladesh 49-4 (9) Das 37 Mushifiqur 0, Woakes 1-37 (5) need 316 runs to win

No runs off that over following the wicket, much tighter from Woakes.

Wicket! Miraz out for 8! ct Buttler b Woakes - Bangladesh 49-4

11:11 , Sonia Twigg

Woakes will have another despite being expensive, and the first ball is cut off on the boundary but pierced the gaps in the ring.

He has struggled to find the right line today.

Woakes strikes, Miraz has gone for eight from seven, he has repaid the faith shown in him by Jos Buttler with a wicket.

Bangladesh 46-3 (8) Das 34, Miraz 8, Topley 3-10 (4) need 319 runs to win

11:08 , Sonia Twigg

Neither Das nor Miraz look comfortable against Topley. The left-hander’s extra height and pace seems to be causing problems, and he already has three wickets to his name this match.

Bangladesh 41-3 (7) Das 31, Miraz 7, Woakes 0-34 (4) need 324 runs to win

11:04 , Sonia Twigg

Miraz off the mark with a boundary off Woakes, he went hard at it through the covers, it was uppish but far from the fielders.

Woakes has continued to leak boundaries here, two from that over and a three from the final ball.

Bangladesh 26-3 (6) Das 22, Miraz 0, Topley 3-5 (3) need 339 runs to win

10:59 , Sonia Twigg

Another great over from Topley, a wicket maiden into the books, he now has three wickets for just five runs.

Wicket! Shakib Al Hasan out for 1! bowled Topley, Bangladesh 26-3

10:56 , Sonia Twigg

Topley will have his third, he’s been much less expensive than Woakes at the other end and has found a reasonable amount of swing so far this innings.

That was a stunner! Best of the lot! It drifted in and then straightened. No chance to play at that, absolute beauty from Topley.

Bangladesh 26-2 (5), Fas 22, Shakib 1, Woakes 0-19 (3) need 339 runs to win

10:53 , Sonia Twigg

Woakes has gone for another boundary, Das is looking comfortable and drives the English bowler again for a four.

Bangladesh 22-2 (4) Das 19, Shakib 1, Topley 2-6 (2) need 343 runs to win

10:49 , Sonia Twigg

A wide one has gone for four, the first boundary conceded by Topley after taking two wickets in two balls in his first.

The first one was just too leg-side and Das was able to flick the ball fine for four.

England review when Shakib Al Hasan was struck on the pads but the review showed the ball hitting outside leg.

Bangladesh 17-2 (3) Das 14, Shakib 1, Woakes 0-15 (2) need 348 runs to win

10:45 , Sonia Twigg

Woakes back into the attack after going for 12 in the first over.

Two from the fist two balls here so a bit tighter from the England all-rounder who is usually so reliable when it comes to line and length.

England have gone attacking and want to get this wrapped up early, an inside edge is almost played back onto the stumps and just three off the over.

Bangladesh 14-2 (2) Das 13, Al Hasan 0, Topley 2-2 (1) need 351 to win

10:40 , Sonia Twigg

This is an important partnership for Bangladesh, but Topley is on a hat-trick against Shakib Al Hasan, he bowls it down leg and it strikes the batter on the pad.

Wicket! Shanto ct Livingstone b Topley - Bangladesh 14-2

10:39 , Sonia Twigg

Shanto goes first ball! Topley has two in two!

Shanto played the ball straight to Livingstone at backwards point

Wicket! Tanzid out for 1. b Topley, ct Bairstow Bangladesh 14-1

10:37 , Sonia Twigg

That was just what England wanted after that first over, Tanzid just fended the ball from Topley straight to Bairstow at second slip and Buttler’s side have the breakthrough.

Bangladesh 12-0 (1) Das 12, Tanzid 0, Woakes 0-12 (1) need 353 runs to win

10:33 , Sonia Twigg

Chris Woakes will bowl the first over of Bangladesh’s innings... and the first ball is just defended by Das.

It has not been a good start, two dot balls and then three consecutive boundaries for Das, Woakes struggled in the first match as well, when his first over went for 10 but this has been more expensive.

England set Bangladesh 365 runs to win

Bangladesh are striding out to the middle to start their reply

England set Bangladesh 365 to win

10:23 , Sonia Twigg

England will be looking to get their bowling innings off to a solid start, they took an early wicket against New Zealand in the opening match - but it proved to be the only one as the Kiwis stormed to a nine-wicket victory.

It is still early in the tournament to say this is a must-win, but with India, Australia and Pakistan still to play, England cannot afford to slip up for a second time.

Dawid Malan: “It was really nice wicket, got a little bit slower as it went on. thankfully me and Jonny got us off to a good start.

“I think when it swings any wicket was a challenge, but I felt like it was skidding on a little bit more and as the game on it went a little bit slower, so hopefully an hour or two more in the sun and it will slow down a little bit more.

“I found hard length, I felt I had to make a move and go across the line so I think if we can keep the stumps in play we will be able to bowl them out.”

England might be feeling a little bit disappointed with that after the platform that was set at the start of the innings by Joe Root, Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow.

Malan scored a stunning 140 runs, Root 82 and Bairstow 52, but after that the batting tailed off significantly, and yet again (similar to the New Zealand game) a number of batters managed to get themselves in and make starts without really putting the pressure back on the bowlers.

Bangladesh bowled well to drag it back and take six wickets for just 66 runs in the final 10 overs of the innings, but England will have wanted more given the start.

End of innings: England 364-9 (50) Wood 6, Topley 1, Taskin 1-39 (6)

09:59 , Sonia Twigg

Reece Topley comes out bat and first ball chases a wide yorker while backing away and gets nowhere near it.

The next one is heaved into the leg side and he will get a single, so one more to the England total.

They scamper through for a single the final ball of the innings

Wicket! Woakes out for 14! England 362-9

09:56 , Sonia Twigg

Final over of the innings, a pace-off delivery has been struck well by Woakes down the ground, and it only just bounces within the boundary rope.

The next one is slower and wider and chased by Woakes who top-edges it to the fielder on the edge of the ring.

England 358-8 (49) Woakes 10, Wood 6, Mahedi 4-71 (8)

09:54 , Sonia Twigg

Mark Wood can be an entertaining figure at the crease and scored runs quickly against Australia during the Ashes Test at Headingley.

He goes textbook for the first delivery with a push into the off side, but the next one is driven to the cover boundary for four.

Wicket! Rashid out for 11! England 352-8

09:51 , Sonia Twigg

Rashid manages to score a four with a leg side flick, this one should have been stopped on the boundary but wasn’t.

He goes for a big heave the next ball and is caught on the boundary! One fielder catches and lobs it to a second fielder as he realised his momentum would carry him over the rope.

A good catch, and England lose another wicket.

England 346-7 (48) Rashid 5, Woakes 10, Shoriful 3-75 (10)

09:48 , Sonia Twigg

Another great bit of work from Bangladesh, the fielder comes for the catch, realises it will just drop short and still manages to cut off the boundary.

A four from the final ball of the over has taken England almost to 150, but they will not reach the 400 milestone which had looked possible before the tumble of wickets.

England 337-7 (47) Woakes 5, Rashid 1, Mahedi 3-59 (7)

09:45 , Sonia Twigg

Woakes adds another two, but it is the wickets that are becoming more problematic and the all-rounder will need to take a big role in seeing England through the last three overs.

Wicket! Curran out for 11! England 334-7

09:44 , Sonia Twigg

That was an excellent catch!

That was hit quick and hard and a stunning dive from Shanto to take the ball while running fast on the boundary and leave England without a recognised batter left.

Mahedi has his third wicket and all credit to Bangladesh for how they’ve pulled this back.

England 333-6 (46) Curran 11, Woakes 2, Shoriful 3-66 (9)

09:40 , Sonia Twigg

Shoriful has been the most prolific of the Bangladesh bowlers and he will return for his ninth over against the new partnership of Curran and Woakes.

A short ball is fended off by Woakes down to fine leg. But it is the variation and changes of pace that have done for the England batters, with cutters and knuckle balls proving difficult.

That was a good over from Bangladesh, just the four runs from it.

England 329-6 (45) Curran 8, Woakes 1, Mahedi 2-55 (6)

09:36 , Sonia Twigg

Bangladesh have pulled this one back, just as it looked like England could score around 400, they have taken three quick wickets.

Curran and Woakes are taking a more measured approach, six from the over, but only two after the wicket of Brook.

Wicket! Brook out for 20! England 327-6

09:33 , Sonia Twigg

Brook drives another boundary, and while in not quite the same explosive fashion as Buttler, he now has 20 runs from just 14 deliveries.

But the next ball he has been caught on the boundary, it was good bowling, but Brook went for it, and was undone by the significantly slower ball.

England 323-5 (44) Brook 16, Curran 7, Shoriful 3-62 (8)

09:31 , Sonia Twigg

Shoriful starts this over on a hat-trick after taking two wickets with the final two balls of his last over...but Curran is able to play the yorker off his legs for two.

After three dot balls, Curran has driven the ball for four, his first boundary of the innings.

England 317-5 (43) Brook 16, Curran 1, Mustafizur 0-70 (10)

09:26 , Sonia Twigg

Brook has not let the pressure fall, with his second boundary in that over, and having been there to support Root he now has to take a leading role in the remainder of this innings.

England 307-5 (42) Brook 7, Shoriful 3-56 (7)

09:24 , Sonia Twigg

That was just the breakthroughs Bangladesh would have wanted, and it might just put a dent to England’s aspirations concerning how many runs they can achieve in the remaining eight overs.

Wicket! Livingstone out for 0! bowled Shoriful, England 307-5

09:22 , Sonia Twigg

That was a beautiful delivery from Shoriful, just rolled the fingers over it, it beat the bat and went straight into the top of off stump.

There will be no big knock from Livingstone, despite his feats at the same ground during this year’s IPL.

He has gone first ball!

Wicket! Root out for 82! England 307-4

09:20 , Sonia Twigg

England will want to push this up towards 400, if not reach the milestone, but with the decision to bring in Reece Topley for Moeen Ali, their batting has taken a hit.

Livingstone is in next, but then it’s Sam Curran and Chris Woakes, so not quite the depth as they had in the first match.

Root cannot reach his century, he has runs to his name but not quite the big milestone.

A knuckle ball, Root doesn’t pick it up and top-edges it high, with the wicketkeeper able to get there in plenty of time.

England 342-3 (41) Root 81, Brook 5, Mustafizur 0-59 (9)

09:17 , Sonia Twigg

The 300 is up for England, Livingstone is shadow-batting as he prepares to come in next.

Root is able to manipulate the field with a clever dab down towards third man.

Six runs from the over.

England 298-3 (40) Root 80, Brook 1, Shoriful 1-54 (6)

09:12 , Sonia Twigg

Brook is off the mark with a single, he is also an attacking player, but might be slightly more measured than his captain as he looks to make an impact at this tournament having been preferred to Jason Roy.

Wicket! Buttler out for 20! bowled Shoriful, England 296-3

09:10 , Sonia Twigg

Buttler goes up and over again and has another boundary, his bat and hand speed is just incredible, has to be one of the quickest in the game.

This pair are running so hard between the wickets.

But Buttler goes at one too many! Buttler expected another yorker, and it was a knuckle-ball that he just chopped on to his own stumps.

His innings comes to an end on 20 from 10.

England 290-2 (39) Root 78, Buttler 14, Mustafizur 0-54 (8)

09:05 , Sonia Twigg

Buttler completely miss-times the ball, it loops up but lands directly between two fielders, it was clever bowling, a good slower ball but it lands perfectly between them and the England captain has got away with one.

The England captain has gone hard at these deliveries and running quickly between the wickets, but there’s still a lot of overs to go in this innings.

Root hits another for four, and England are close to 300.

England 279-2 (38) Buttler 9, Root 73, Mahedi 1-49 (5)

09:01 , Sonia Twigg

And Buttler wastes no time when he comes to the crease, the second ball has flown away for six!

Just a few balls later he has another! A strong show of intent from the England captain, if aided slightly by the thinner air at the altitude of the stadium.

Wicket! Malan out for 140, bowled Mahedi, England 266-2

08:59 , Sonia Twigg

Malan goes for another heave and completely misses it! It brings an end to what was a stunning innings from the England opener.

England 262-1 (37) Root 69, Malan 136, Taskin 0-33 (5)

08:54 , Sonia Twigg

Malan has another six, a front foot pull has flown several rows deep into the crowd and been caught by a fan one-handed!

The rest of the over is comfortably knocked around for singles.

England 251-1 (36) Root 67, Malan 128, Shoriful 0-46 (5)

08:50 , Sonia Twigg

Root whips the ball away for four, any length ball is being punished - whether that’s seam or spin and that ball was no different.

England have their 28th four of the match.

Root has the most runs for England in ICC men’s cricket world cups, he really is the performer on the biggest stage!

Although just after that he has gone for a reverse-sweep and been struck on the back.

The next ball is hit down the ground for four however.
