Empire State Winter Games torch run to visit sites in Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, Saugerties

The Empire State Winter Games next week will be preceded by torch runs through several Mid-Hudson communities.

There will be one relay starting in the Buffalo Region and another in the Mid-Hudson, both headed for the Lake Placid region.

The eastern run starts at the Mid-Hudson Ice Arena in Poughkeepsie at 1 p.m. Sunday. During this visit, Jonathan Peterson, a Special Olympics skater, will join 10 other students representing the Arena. The next stop will be the Ice Time Sports Complex in Newburgh at 4:15 p.m. where members of the Hudson Valley Skating Club, plus area hockey players will carry the torch into Ice Time.

The Kiwanis Ice Rink in Saugerties will host the torch on Tuesday at 5 p.m. following a short parade from Washington Avenue to Main Street and Market Street. Former ESGW athletes will join local and regional officials.

The Empire State Winter Games will be held for the 44th time in the Lake Placid region from Feb. 1-4. More than 2,500 athletes from the state and northeast will compete in more than 20 events. The opening ceremony will be hosted by Lake Placid’s Olympic Center and the Herb Brooks Arena on Feb. 1 at 6:30 p.m.

A handful of Mid-Hudson athletes have been entered: Bobsled/skeleton and luge – Jackson Gastio, 9, of Highland; Nordic skiing – Andie Psilopoulos, 18, of Gardiner; Snowshoe – Frank Vigna, 53, of New Paltz; Speedskating – Luca Sakhnovskiy, 8, of Kingston, and Jonathan Furminger, 60, of Highland. There is no roster information on figure skating and ice hockey at this time.
