Emmett Palmberg, Sydney Geisen earn Press-Citizen's Athlete of the Week honors

Iowa City High runner Emmett Palmberg and tennis player Sydney Geisen were voted by readers as the Iowa City Press-Citizen's Athletes of the Week for April 29-May 5.

Palmberg earned boys Athlete of the Week with 39% of the vote. Iowa City West discus thrower Colin Whitters placed second with 23% of the vote.

Palmberg broke a freshman record that stood since 1995. He hit a record time of 1:59.83 in the 800 meters at the MVC Valley Divisional Track & Field meet. He placed fifth in the event.

Geisen earned girls Athlete of the Week with 35% of the vote. Regina soccer player Alison Brandt earned second place with 28% of the vote.

Geisen, a sophomore, was a strong contributor to Iowa City High's 7-2 win over Prairie. The second-year Little Hawk won a singles match in straight sets (6-1, 6-1). She also won in doubles competition with teammate Hattie Conover (6-1, 6-3).
