Eleven big races to attend in June, Wisconsin’s busiest month for motorsports (but you can’t hit ’em all)

If May is the signal to Wisconsin fans the racing season has arrived, then the calendar flipping to June triggers a challenge just to keep up.

The busiest and most diverse portion of the short summer season delivers motorcycles and Indy cars to the big track, stock cars to the Mile and two major series of sprint car among the many short track options.

Here’s a look at 11 events to consider attending in southeast Wisconsin in June. (Hint: barring a rainout, a conflict between two of the most enticing races makes perfect attendance impossible.)

More: Key dates Wisconsin racing fans should know for 2023

MotoAmerica

What: Motorcycle road racing often provides some of most entertaining competition of the year at Road America. Jake Gagne leads the standings in the premier Superbike class. Mathew Scholtz and Cameron Peterson split the features last year after Gagne swept in 2021.

When and where: June 2-4 at Road America, Elkhart Lake. Races start 12:50 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday; featured Superbike races are at 3:10 p.m. both days.

Tickets: Roadamerica.com or at the gate.

All Star Circuit of Champions

What: One of three major national winged sprint car series races in co-sanctioned events with the Wisconsin-based traveling IRA Sprints. The series raced twice in the state last season with Bill Balog winning at the Plymouth Dirt Track and Hunter Schuerenberg at Angell Park Speedway. The All Stars competed this May at Wilmot Raceway, where Tyler Courtney dominated a caution-free feature. Courtney, who has two wins and 10 top-10s in 11 features, leads the championship.

When and where: June 2 at the Dodge County Fairgrounds Speedway, Beaver Dam.

When and where: June 3 at Plymouth Dirt Track on the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds. The Rayce Rudeen Foundation race is the most lucrative All Stars event, paying $26,000 to the winner, but serves as an awareness and fundraising tool for the foundation. The Rayce Rudeen Foundation was launched to help people struggling with addiction and their families find treatment, recovery and support and at the same time honor the memory of a young man from a longtime racing family who died from a drug overdose.

Tickets: Allstarsprints.com for Dodge County and for Plymouth, or at the gate.

IMCA modifieds

What: The Clash at the Creek pays $10,000 to win, a massive amount for this type of racing, and consequently draws a massive field. IMCA is the oldest active auto racing sanctioning body in the country, and modifieds are popular for their close racing with tight rules that keep them cost-efficient.

When and where: June 13-14, 141 Speedway, Maribel.

Tickets:  At the gate.

World of Outlaws

What: The most established national winged sprint car series has a doubleheader paying $10,000 to the winner on the first night and $20,000 on the second. It also is supported by local/regional IRA teams and drivers. Sheldon Haudenschild has won three straight races at Beaver Dam Raceway, as Brad Sweet did before him. Sweet, a four-time series champion, held the lead in points and victories as May ended.

When: June 16-17

Where: Beaver Dam Raceway.

Tickets: (815) 344-2023, SLSpromtions.com, or at the gate.

More to know: The Outlaws also visit Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond June 30-July 1 and then return to southeast Wisconsin for a July 8 race at Wilmot Raceway on the Kenosha County Fairgrounds.

NTT IndyCar Series

What: The series built around the Indianapolis 500 brings the fastest open-wheel cars in the country. Josef Newgarden, who just won the 500 for the first time, is the defending winner of the Sonsio Grand Prix. Spaniard Alex Palou, winner in 2021, leads the standings entering the month.

When: June 15-18. The race is scheduled for noon Sunday.

Where: Road America, Elkhart Lake.

Tickets: Roadamerica.com or at the gate.

ASA STARS National Tour

What: The first-year series brings together competitors from three regional super late model series and sometimes attracts a handful of NASCAR drivers. All three national series are off the weekend of the Father’s Day 100. This has been a Midwest Tour event and was most recently won by Casey Johnson.

When: June 18.

Where: Milwaukee Mile at State Fair Park in West Allis.

Tickets: Wistatefair.com or at the gate.

USAC

What: Two of the three classic open-wheel divisions come for a weekend that’ll undoubtedly include some crossover. Dirt specialist C.J. Leary dominated on the asphalt in the Silver Crown race at Madison International Speedway last year. A sprint car race at Wilmot Raceway was rained out, and Robert Ballou won the sprint car race at Angell Park Speedway.

When and where: Silver Crown, June 23 at Madison International Speedway, Town of Rutland.

When and where: Sprint cars, June 24, Wilmot Raceway on the Kenosha County Fairgrounds.

When and where: Sprint cars, June 25, Angell Park Speedway, Sun Prairie.

Tickets: Tickethoss.com for Madison and Angell Park, wilmotraceway.com for Wilmot, or at the gate.
