El Paso Times Game of the Week: Matadors look to stay unbeaten against Huskies
This week's El Paso Times' High School Football Game of the Week features No. 7 Parkland against No. 8 Chapin at 7 p.m. Friday at Irvin High School.
The Matadors have defeated El Dorado, Austin and Burges to start the season 3-0. Chapin lost a close one, 17-13, to an improved Coronado team and defeated El Dorado, 34-17. Both teams are in Class 6A.
Parkland competes in District 1-5A Division 1 and Chapin competes in District 1-5A Division II. The Matadors have given up 17 points in the past two games and defensively have been led by Juan Gomez and Kaleb Martinez, who have combined for 75 tackles. Head coach Leigh McWhorter is in his second year as head coach and has gotten his team to play at a high level to start the year despite the team losing key players on offense, including two Division I signees.
Chapin, who is guided by coach Ryan Warner, has a strong offense that will test the Parkland defense led by running back Carey Wade and wide receivers Savion Jordan and Brent Hallman, Jr. The Huskies defense hasn't been bad either, allowing 34 points in two games.
