Edman's versatility and speed make him valuable

DREW SILVA: The knock on Tommy Edman coming into the year was that he was likely to lose his leadoff spot in St. Louis because he simply hadn't been very good offensively since his breakout rookie campaign in 2019. And while he did indeed begin this season batting ninth for new Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol, Edman quickly regained that table-setting role amid the early struggles of Dylan Carlson. There are still holes to poke and part of Edman's game, he hasn't flashed much power and struggles against right-handed pitching despite being a switch hitter.
But the 27-year-old is currently tied for the National League lead in stolen bases with 14, tied with his teammate, Harrison Bader in fact, and he has scored 44 runs in 54 games while batting in front of Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, and power-hitting rookie, Nolan Gorman. The arrival of Gorman has shifted Edman over to shortstop, and so he now has full middle infield eligibility. That only adds to his fantasy profile. It's a unique profile, but valuable in its uniqueness with his propensity to swiftly get around the bases.
