For years, the best players in Delaware high school field hockey have taken the field for Delmar and Cape Henlopen.
Now, add Smyrna to that elite list.
The Eagles shocked Cape 2-1 in overtime in the DIAA Division I championship game last fall, ending the Vikings’ five-year run of titles.
This season, Smyrna has already proved that was no fluke by beating the Vikings 2-1 again on Sept. 14, at Cape Henlopen’s Champions Stadium.
Meanwhile, Delmar continues to roll along. The Wildcats are ranked No. 1 in Division II, 4-0 this year, outscoring their opponents 33-1 so far.
That runs the Wildcats’ current winning streak to an amazing 119 games.
So it should be no surprise that when the state’s top coaches were asked to rank the best players heading into the 2023 season, athletes from those three schools were obvious standouts.
Eagles, Vikings and Wildcats occupy all of the top six spots – two from each school. Combined, the three teams have 10 players among the top 18.
So it may be tough going for everyone else when the playoffs roll around. But the coaches identified plenty of other talented athletes around the state, including five ranked players from Newark Charter and four from Lake Forest.
