UNCASVILLE, Conn. - You can add another first-place finish to the already decorated high school career of Dover High School golfer Carys Fennessy.

This past Monday, Fennessy competed at the New England Girls Golf Championship at the Mohegan Sun Resort Course. She shot a 5-under-par 67 to win the individual championship, beating the 50-person field. Moses Brown School (Providence) sophomore Adriana Eaton placed second, six strokes behind Fennessy.

Not even the weather could stop Fennessy.

"The weather was pretty bad," she said. "It was like really rainy, windy and cold; typical New England fall weather. I definitely paid more attention to the wind, and yardages. The ball goes less when it's colder so you just have to pay more attention to your game than you do on a normal sunny day. I tried not to let the conditions get to me.

"I played pretty well," she continued. "I think I hit almost every fairway off the tee, so that really helped my confidence. I also got a few putts to drop, so that was good."

Winnacunnet's June Doerr was eighth with a 78, and Oyster River's Delaney Nadeau (80) was 11th. This was Fennessy's third time competing in the New England Championship, tying for third last year, and placing sixth in 2021 as a freshman.

"(Winning) has been a goal of mine for a while," Fennessy said. "It feels good. They've made a few course improvement changes, so I had some course knowledge of some of the holes, and the other ones I was kind of going into them blind."

Quite the year for Fennessy

Fennessy's latest title comes just a few weeks after she took home the NHIAA individual girls state championship for the third straight year.

And back in August, Fennessy won the New Hampshire Women's Golf Amateur championship.

Even with all the success, it doesn't hold her back from taking any tournament lightly and is always motivated.

"I put a lot of time and effort into golf and I'm very passionate about it," Fennessy said. "I just make sure that I display the best of my game and the amount of hard work I put in. Golf is difficult because it's one of those games you have to practice like it means the world, and play like it doesn't. So when I'm out there, I just try to be gentle with myself, and kind of just do my thing."

What's next?

Fennessy will compete in the Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championship at Koasati Pines at Coushatta in Louisiana next week (Nov. 9-11).
