Dolphins hold off Bills 21-19 to take control of AFC. Here's five takeaways from the win

MIAMI GARDENS — Once again, the Dolphins’ game was capped by a wild finish. And once again, they prevailed in dramatic fashion.

After outscoring the Ravens by 25 points in the fourth quarter of last week’s road win, the Dolphins rallied in the fourth quarter Sunday and then held off the Bills for an emotional 21-19 win at Hard Rock Stadium.

The Dolphins (3-0) sit atop the AFC East. Miami has won 8 consecutive games at home and is 11-1 in its 12 games overall.

In a battle of 2-0 teams, the Dolphins seized a 21-17 lead on Chase Edmonds’ 3-yard touchdown run with 10:08 left. Then the Dolphins stopped the Bills on fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line with 1:49 left.

The Dolphins were forced to punt and disaster unfolded as Thomas Morstead’s boot hit teammate Trent Sherfield’s back and went out of the end zone for a safety. That gave the Bills a final chance to drive for the winning field goal with 1:33 left and no timeouts.

They ran out of time, however, as the clock expired after Isaiah McKenzie’s 12-yard completion to the Dolphins’ 41-yard line.

Here are our five takeaways from Sunday’s game:

Tua Tagovailoa returns from scary second-quarter injury

Coming off a stellar fourth quarter against the Ravens, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was rolling again Sunday (8-for-10, 76 yards, 1 TD) when he suffered a head injury late in the first half on a roughing the passer penalty by Bills linebacker Matt Milano.

Tagovailoa’s helmet struck the turf as he fell backward and he got up woozy, stumbling and falling after jogging a few steps upfield. Teddy Bridgewater replaced him for the rest of the drive, and he was 0-for-2 passing. Tagovailoa was back under center to start the second half.

He wound up 13-for-18 passing for 186 yards with the one touchdown and no interceptions.

Melvin Ingram makes an early impact

Dolphins pass rusher Melvin Ingram made his presence known early in Sunday’s game. He sacked Bills quarterback Josh Allen for a 1-yard loss on third-and-goal from the 1 on the game’s opening possession and recovered Allen’s fumble at the Bills’ 6-yard line after Jevon Holland blitzed off the edge and hit Allen’s arm from behind on the Bills’ second drive.

Then early in the second quarter, Ingram strip sacked Allen for a seven-yard loss. Bills tackle Spencer Brown recovered the fumble. Ingram, who signed a one-year, $5 million free-agent contract with the Dolphins in May, registered at least seven sacks per year from 2015 to 2019, including a career high 10.5 sacks twice, while making the Pro Bowl three times during that span.

Jaylen Waddle comes up with huge catch

Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle started Sunday’s game ranked first and third in the NFL in receiving yards with 284 and 240, respectively, but were kept in check by the Bills until the fourth quarter.

That’s when Waddle reeled in a 45-yard completion from Tagovailoa on third-and-22 from the Dolphins’ 48-yard line to set up the go-ahead touchdown. Prior to that grab, Hill and Waddle had combined for five catches and 90 yards.

Tagovailoa completed passes to six different players Sunday, including receiver River Cracraft, who caught his second touchdown pass in as many weeks — an 11-yard laser from Tagovailoa in the second quarter to cap a nine-play, 83-yard drive.

Cracraft, who was sent back to the practice squad after a 2-yard touchdown against the Ravens, was elevated for the third time, meaning he will have to be signed to the active roster to play another game for the Dolphins this season. The 27-year-old undrafted former Washington State standout didn’t record a touchdown in four years played for Denver and San Francisco.

Dolphins' rushing attack sputters

The Dolphins got a pair of rushing touchdowns from Chris Edmonds — a 1-yard run in the first quarter and 3-yard burst in the third — but struggled to get much going on the ground all afternoon. They gained just 42 yards on 15 carries, with half of those coming on six carries from Edmonds. Raheem Mostert had 12 yards on seven rushing attempts.

Meanwhile, Bills quarterback Josh Allen had 47 yards alone on eight carries for the Bills.

Josh Allen dazzles again

Josh Allen showed once again why he’s regarded as one of the NFL’s best players. He completed 15 of his first 17 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns and finished 42-for-63 passing for 400 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

He also was the Bills’ top weapon on the ground.

Allen fired incomplete on fourth-and-goal from the 2 with 1:49 left, but got the ball back for one final drive after a safety 16 seconds later.
