Dolphins say contract talks on hold with Tua Tagovailoa, Christian Wilkins

MIAMI GARDENS — General manager Chris Grier said Wednesday that the Dolphins are putting contract negotiations with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and defensive tackle Christian Wilkins on hold until the end of the season.

Grier said he and Tagovailoa’s agents have had discussions but came to one agreement: “Let’s just let him play out the season and then attack that in the offseason.”

Tagovailoa is scheduled to make $9.6 million this year and $23.1 million next season, the final year of his rookie contract.

Wilkins is in the final year of his contract now and is scheduled to make $10.7 million.

“In terms of Christian, we've had a lot of great dialogue with him and his agent, very positive,” Grier said. “You know, we made an offer that we thought was fair, and there's times when you do things like that it has to work for both sides.”

But Wilkins’ side didn’t agree to the Dolphins’ offer.

“Right now, we're we're going to hold off until, in my mind, at the end of the season because I don't think it's fair to distract Christian from his goal of what he wants to achieve and for the team,” Grier said.

Wilkins said Tuesday that his attention is squarely on football, not business.

“I’m just focused on being the best teammate I can be and being there for my guys and getting ready to play a game and get focused on the season,” he said. “As far as all of that goes, whether or not something gets done, my focus is on the season. We have a game to play in two weeks.”
