What does Bucs HC Todd Bowles hope to get out of rookie minicamp?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers opened their rookie minicamp earlier this week, giving their draft picks, undrafted free agents, tryout players and a handful of other hopefuls a chance to make a positive impression on the coaching staff ahead of the 2022 season.

Todd Bowles is presiding over his first rookie minicamp as the Bucs’ head coach, taking over for Bruce Arians after three seasons.

What is Tampa Bay’s new leader looking for from his rookies this week?

“Just who can obtain the information we give them,” Bowles told the media after Saturday’s session. “Every day is a new install – who can apply it, who can put it out on the field, who can make mistakes and learn from them. Really, the physical part will take care of itself. We want to see what kind of shape their in. We know they’re not in tip-top shape, but really it’s the mental part of it. Getting them to run around and start understanding the scheme.”

Tampa Bay’s loaded roster should make it challenging for a surprising rookie to earn a roster spot this year, but the team should still have some spirited competition at multiple positions that could lead to a training camp appearance.
