These District 10 wrestling teams shined in Wednesday's home openers

EDINBORO – General McLane left Wednesday’s dual meet with several reasons for optimism.

First, the Lancers saw a sizable turnout for their home wrestling opener against North East. Then, their top wrestler returned from injury.

Ryan Cook’s 18th home opener as head coach at McLane finished the same way many had prior – with a victory. Against a tough Grapepicker squad, McLane’s middle and upper weights helped piece together a 47-23 win.

“I’m happy, especially with the crowd,” Cook said. “We always want more pins to get the crowd excited but there were some good matchups out there and we knew (North East) was tough down low.”

Back in the win column

McLane opened its season five days prior in District 5, where it dropped a tight dual meet to Chestnut Ridge. In returning home for its District 10 Region 4 opener, GM welcomed back 189-pounder Magnus Lloyd, a returning PIAA medalist whose technical fall over Logan Lattimore was one of five consecutive mid-meet victories for McLane.

“I love wrestling and everything about it,” said Lloyd. “I love being out here and I love my team, so the fact that I didn’t get to wrestle one match last week was fuel on the fire and made me want to come back even more.”

North East kept pace early with victories by major decision from Bryson Galloway (127 pounds) and Cyrus Hurd (133), plus a decision by Konnor Kimmy at 145. Chance Kimmy’s victory for McLane at 152, however, was followed by four more, turning a 12-11 Lancer lead into 41-11.

Winners by fall for McLane also included Lukas Kuffer (139 pounds), Hudson Spires (160), Ben Watkins (172) and Dom Snyder (107).

“I have a lot of big goals for this season, so I do my best in the practice room every day and push myself and my teammates,” said Spires, a junior. “It feels good to get the first dual meet win out of the way. I’m really focusing on getting my skills down and perfecting my style to hopefully win some more big matches this year.”

Wednesday was a rematch of the 2023 D-10 duals, where McLane beat the Grapepickers, 51-17, in the first round. McLane boasts one of the district’s deeper rosters – able to field two or three wrestlers at most weight classes – and hopes to use lineup flexibility to its advantage.

“We have a strong, balanced lineup,” Cook said. “We have some younger guys who need to get better but a lot of them showed up tonight. We’re two deep at every weight class, so we have some moves we can make.”

“Opening night” in District 10

Regular season competition started nearly two weeks ago but, with 12 dual meets on the schedule, Wednesday marked D-10’s first busy night of wrestling.

Fort LeBoeuf and Corry each recorded a dominant victory in their respective home openers. Harbor Creek rolled over Girard for its second victory of the young season.
