DirecTV subscribers in Jacksonville can't watch Jaguars game on SNF. Here's what to do

The Jacksonville Jaguars play their first Sunday Night Football game since 2008 this weekend against Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens.

And some fans in Jags-crazy Duval County won't be able to watch the game on TV.

The ongoing dispute between DirecTV and broadcasting company Tegna means customers of the satellite company are blacked out from several stations across the country, including WTLV, Jacksonville's NBC affiliate. NBC hosts the weekly NFL primetime game, meaning some fans will have to turn away from their TVs to watch the Jaguars' showdown with the Ravens, who enter the game tied for the best record in the NFL.

What does that mean for Jaguars fans Sunday night? Here's what we know.

Why is Sunday Night Football on NBC not on DirecTV?

On November 30, some NBC, Fox, CBS and ABC stations across the country went black for DirecTV subscribers. About 40% of DirecTV's customers across 51 markets were affected, according to Bloomberg.

The stations, including Jacksonville's NBC affiliate WTLV, are owned by Tegna Inc. The broadcasting company and DirecTV are in talks over how much the satellite TV provider pays for programming. When their contract expired without new terms, DirecTV blacked out Tenga-owned channels. The blackout also applies to subscribers of DirecTV Stream and U-Verse.

DirecTV representatives said in a posted statement that the blackouts occurred because Tegna rejected an offer to extend the contract through the college football and NFL seasons. Tegna representatives said they are "committed to reaching fair, market-based agreements" with all video service providers.

When will the network return to DirecTV?

It's unknown when the Tegna-DirecTV dispute will end. Similar disputes between TV providers and station owners have been taking place recently. One blackout between Charter Spectrum and Disney, which caused some Florida Gators and FSU football fans to miss their season openers, lasted from August 31 to September 11.
