How did Troy baseball get through long opening day of NCAA Tournament

TUSCALOOSA - The last time the Troy baseball team was able to eat was at 9 a.m. on Friday before its 2 p.m. NCAA Tournament opener versus Boston College.

The game, which the Trojans won 11-10, didn't wrap up until after 8 p.m. thanks to a two-hour weather delay in the bottom of the second. So how did Troy make it through a marathon of day?

"… I think the result was lots and lots of caffeine got us through, at least me," pitcher Ben Thompson said.

For Thompson's teammates, the moment itself —playing in the program's first regional since 2018 —was enough to power them through the day. It was the fourth straight NCAA Tournament-opening win for the Trojans.

"It's super easy, we're playing a regional. It doesn't get any better than this … so it's easy to keep pushing on days like today," said Kole Myers, whose seventh-inning home run gave Troy a lead it wouldn't lose.

Myers’ teammate Caleb Batrolero, who also hit a big home run in the seventh, echoed the sentiment.

"If your adrenaline isn't pumping today, then you're playing the wrong sport," Bartolero said. "We all felt pretty good, we were having fun … when it came back to lock in we were ready for the moment and we came back and answered the bell."

The good news for the Trojans is that they play in the night game on Saturday, facing the winner of Alabama and Nicholls at 8 p.m. The winner will advance to the regional final.
