After Deuce Knight's departure, Tav Shaffer starting QB for Lipscomb Academy vs. Baylor

CHATTANOOGA – Lipscomb Academy opens Division II-AAA East Region play against Baylor with junior Tav Shaffer as its starting quarterback Friday.

Shaffer takes over the position after the departure of four-star QB Deuce Knight. Knight, the No. 5 quarterback in the country for the class of 2025 according to 247Sports Composite, left the Mustangs program Tuesday after only three games.

Knight arrived from George County, Mississippi, with an offer list that includes Alabama, Notre Dame, Ole Miss and Tennessee among others. He immediately became the No. 3 player in Tennessee when he announced his transfer to Lipscomb on July 30. The Mustangs (1-2) lost their first two games to IMG Academy and Saraland, Alabama before rolling to a 42-20 win over Briarcrest Christian last week. Knight was 18-of-31 passing for 187 yards and had seven carries for 12 yards and two touchdowns against Briarcrest Christian.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Shaffer battled Jackson Kilburg for the starting position last spring and throughout the summer until Knight arrived.
