MEET THE TEAM: Detroit Tigers 2024 roster prediction 3.0: Are the 13 position players already locked in?

Game notes: The Tigers are still looking for their first win in the Grapefruit League after collapsing on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Detroit was leading, 9-3, heading into the seventh inning but allowed two runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth, and with that the game ended in a tie.

It's not the end of the world, it's just an exhibition and an early one in spring training at that, but there were both some positives and negatives to take from Sunday's game.

Through two games it's undeniable the Tigers are wiping off some rust. On Saturday against the New York Yankees, the Tigers allowed 22 runs and issued 14 walks in a game that would seemingly never end. Then on Sunday, the Tigers had the bats going with five runs in the third inning, but sloppy plays like the one below saw them give away the game.

As for the positives, the Tigers are seeing some early production from their young pieces.

Colt Keith, fresh off a new long-term contract that he signed before he even made his MLB debut, picked up a double on Saturday after going down 0-2 in the count, a sign of the hitter he can be.

MORE ON KEITH: It wasn't a walk in the park, but Detroit Tigers' Colt Keith showed why he'll be special

Highly touted slugger Justyn-Henry Malloy, who is scratching and clawing to make the Tigers' opening day roster, had a couple of hits on Sunday against the Rays, including a home run.

And Wilmer Flores, the Tigers' second-highest-rated pitching prospect, came in and through absolute gas, hitting 98 mph or above with his first six pitches before things went a bit off the rails.

So in other words, it's spring training. Don't want to read too much into it. But of course, there are things to monitor. For example, Jack Flaherty, the Tigers' second-highest-paid player after signing a one-year, $14 million deal with the team this offseason, is set to make his debut with the team today against the Astros. Don't expect him to fill a ton of innings, but it'll be interesting to see how he looks in a Tigers uniform, although it'll be their orange and blue and not the vintage Old English "D" outfits.
