MISERY INDEX: Here's why the Tigers aren't the most miserable team in MLB this season

Game notes: Sunday was a nice win for the Tigers, even through Robbie Grossman and Elvin Rodriguez left the game early. The bullpen shut down the Cleveland Guardians as Jeimer Candelario and Harold Castro went yard.

On Memorial Day 2021, the Tigers lost to the Milwaukee Brewers in 10 innings. That was about the time the Tigers began to play better (outside of losing six out of seven vs. the White Sox in June), with a winning record over the final five months of the season. Detroit was 22-32 after Memorial Day and had won four of its last five at that point.

The team is approaching that same point, about 50 games into the season, but won't have a winning record this month. If, however, the Tigers can win Monday, a two-game winning streak vs. their rivals could help build momentum for June as Riley Greene potentially gets set to make his MLB debut and Eduardo Rodriguez and Tyler Alexander near their returns from injury.

The Twins lead the American League Central, following a four-game set with the Kansas City Royals. They haven't lost a series since May 10-12 vs. the Houston Astros. Luis Arraez is second in the majors, hitting .359 behind only former Tigers slugger J.D. Martinez, now with the Boston Red Sox. Max Kepler has six home runs, is slashing .247/.353/425 and leads the team in WAR 1.7. Trevor Larnach is tied with Arraez for second in WAR (1.6), though he's played just 28 games, because he is slashing .289/.365/.470.

It's a tough task for righty Beau Brieske, who held the Twins to two runs while scattering six hits in his most recent start, Tuesday in Minneapolis. Unfortunately for the rookie, he went just four innings, and was backed by the Tigers' offense, which is to say, NOT backed, as the Tigers were shutout and Brieske took the loss in a 2-0 final.

The teams play a split doubleheader Tuesday (wtih 1:10 and 7:10 p.m. starts) then a night game Wednesday and a day game Thursday.
