SUNDAY'S LOSS Detroit Tigers can't capitalize on walks in 6-4 loss to Washington Nationals

Game notes: The Tigers open a three-game set in Kansas City, Missouri, against the Royals, who have the worst record in the AL Central after getting swept by the White Sox in Chicago. The Royals are somehow worse — barely — at home, with just six wins in 23 tries at Kauffman Stadium this year. (They’re 8-16 on the road.)

Brady Singer gets the ball for K.C.; after posting an ace-like 3.23 ERA last season, he’s at 7.09 in 2023. It appears to be the result of poor luck, though, since his 40 strikeouts and 16 walks over 45⅔ innings suggest his stuff hasn’t changed much. He has had issues at Kauffman, though, with 11 of those walks coming at home, and paired with five home runs in five starts.

Tigers starter Michael Lorenzen doesn’t have a similar issue with Kauffman — or at least we don’t think he does; the nine-year vet has just one career appearance at the park (and one career appearance against the Royals), a one-inning relief stint almost exactly eight years ago (May 20, 2015). Lorenzen entered in the seventh inning, gave up a single to former Tiger Omar Infante, then got a double play and a popout to third — all on just 11 pitches.

The Tigers and Royals are set to continue the series on Tuesday night, though the pitching matchup has yet to be announced. It should be Eduardo Rodriguez’s turn for the Tigers, while Carlos Hernández seems to slot into an “opener” role in the Royals’ rotation between Singer and the everlasting Zack Greinke, who’ll start the series finale Wednesday. The Tigers return to Detroit after the series for a four-game weekend set against the White Sox, while the Royals get a day off before welcoming the Nationals to town for three games.
