Game notes: Former Detroit Tigers ace Max Scherzer will return to Detroit for the first night of back-to-back return visits from Tigers' greats, with Justin Verlander set to pitch on Thursday. Scherzer makes his first start after serving a 10-game suspension for violating the league's foreign substance policy April 19. He was ejected in the fourth inning during a start vs. the LA Dodgers for having a sticky substance on his hand. Scherzer was also fined.

Scherzer pitched in Detroit for five seasons, including the 2013 season when he won his first of three Cy Young awards. Now in his ninth season since leaving the Tigers, Scherzer is still one of the best pitchers in baseball. He has a 3.72 ERA in four games this season. In 2022, his first season with the Mets, he had a 2.29 ERA in 23 starts while missing time with an oblique injury.

While the Tigers' bats seem to be warming up a bit (at least compared to the start of the year) they will have their hands full with the Scherzer and Verlander 1-2 punch over the next two days.
