Detroit Pistons buy out Nerlens Noel's $9.2M contract

The Detroit Pistons have reached a buyout agreement with Nerlens Noel, a league source confirmed to the Free Press on Monday.

The 28-year-old veteran center was seldom used this season, appearing in just 14 games. Noel arrived in Detroit alongside Alec Burks in a deal with the New York Knicks last summer. He was on the books for $9.24 million this season, and had a team option worth $9.68 million this offseason. It's not known how much money Noel gave back in his agreement.

The Pistons now have an open roster spot, which they could use to survey the waiver and buyout market and sign another young player. They signed R.J. Hampton last Thursday after the 2020 first-round pick (No. 24 overall) was waived by the Orlando Magic.

The news of Noel's buyout was initially reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski
