Des Moines Hoover boys basketball beats Waverly-Shell Rock, advances to state tournament

Des Moines Hoover boys basketball has advanced to the Iowa high school state tournament for the first time since 2016 by beating Waverly-Shell Rock, 59-44, Monday night.

“This group has been through a lot over the last four years,” said Hoover coach Courtney Henderson. “And to see them get an opportunity to play down in the state tournament is amazing. It’s quite the accomplishment.”

The Huskies jumped out to a 14-8 lead by the end of the first quarter, thanks to a 7-point performance from senior guard Chase Henderson. Hoover outscored the Go-Hawks 18-7 in the second quarter, going up by as many as 19 at one point, and held a 17-point advantage at halftime.
