Derrick Henry landing spots: Ravens and other teams that could use former Titans RB
Update: Derrick Henry signs free agent deal with the Baltimore Ravens
The market for running backs was hot at the start of NFL free agent negotiations on Monday, but one notable name is still waiting to sign with a team.
Derrick Henry, the former Tennessee Titans running back with two NFL rushing titles, is still on the market. Henry appeared set to test the free agent market for the first time after giving an impassioned speech to Titans fans after the team's Week 18 game.
The Titans signed former Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Pollard to a three-year deal on Monday, shutting the door on any hopes of a return to Nashville for Henry.
At the Trade Deadline the Titans decided to hold onto a Derrick Henry.

Now, the former Offensive Player of the Year seeks out his second team just a couple of months after his 30th birthday. Here are some of Henry's potential landing spots.

What are the likely landing spots for Derrick Henry?
Baltimore Ravens
Ravens starter Gus Edwards agreed to terms with the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday. Fellow running back J.K. Dobbins is also a free agent and played in just nine games over the past three seasons due to different lower-body injuries. Second-year back Keaton Mitchell is recovering from an ACL tear.
The only healthy running back remaining on the Ravens' roster is Justice Hill, who is set to become a free agent after this season.
Baltimore ran the ball at a higher rate than any other NFL offense in 2023 and need a lead running back to carry that load going into 2024.
As things currently stand, the Ravens are the most likely landing spot for Henry. CBS Sports NFL Insider Josina Anderson reported Monday night that Baltimore and Henry have mutual interest in getting a deal done.
I'm told there's interest on both sides between the #Ravens and RB Derrick Henry, per source.

On Tuesday morning, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported the Ravens were among teams Henry and his camp spoke to, while adding "nothing is imminent."

Free agency winners and losers: Cowboys wisely opt not to overspend on Day 1
Houston Texans
While Houston's neighbors, the Cowboys, seem like a good fit with Pollard departed and Rico Dowdle a free agent, Anderson reported that Dallas is "not expected to be at the top of the RB market compensation-wise."
Meanwhile, the Texans have made it clear they're willing to spend on a new lead back. Reports from Monday indicated Houston was among teams bidding for running back Saquon Barkley, who eventually signed with the Eagles. The position is an evident need for Houston after Devin Singletary left for the Giants on Monday and Dameon Pierce struggled mightily in his second year as a pro.
After missing out on their top choice, Houston may pivot to Henry, snatching the top running back left on the market and getting the opportunity to set him off against his former team twice a year.
Texans reporter Aaron Wilson reported Tuesday the Texans have the veteran running back on their radar.

Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers signed another running back Monday to replace Austin Ekeler, but Edwards' deal is for two years and $6.5 million. With fewer than $4 million committed to one free agent back and Joshua Kelley also a free agent, Los Angeles has room to add to their backfield.
In addition, new Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh demonstrated success wielding a two-headed backfield with Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards at Michigan. The team's new offensive coordinator, Greg Roman, had similar success in his time with Baltimore, where Dobbins and Edwards shared a backfield.
As of Tuesday morning, there are no reports indicating conversations between Henry and the Chargers have occurred. Though with Edwards soon to celebrate his 29th birthday, an acquisition of Henry for the right price would help keep both veteran backs fresh and allow Los Angeles a chance to dominate on the ground.
