DeLany, Flaitz help host Red Raiders capture team title at 57th Hornell Invitational

HORNELL — The 57th annual Hornell Invitational was back and nearly bigger than ever, welcoming more than two dozen schools and over 800 athletes to Maple City Park on Friday.

When the dust settled, the Franklinville girls and the St. Thomas boys captured the team titles, while the host Red Raiders took the combined team championship.

“With 25 teams and over 800 athletes, it was the largest Hornell Invitational in two decades featuring some of the best athletes from Sections IV, V, and VI in outstanding track and field competition,” said Hornell coach Mike DeGaetano. “It was a night of fast times, amazing throws, soaring jumps and leaps, personal bests, school records, and NYS Standards.”

Hornell’s Brennan DeLany stood out in the talented field and was the only athlete at the meet to win four individual events. In addition to his field event wins in the long jump, triple jump and pole vault, DeLany won the 110m hurdles by 1.07 seconds on the track.

“In going over 39 years of results, Brennan is the only male athlete to win four individual events,” said DeGaetano. “It is a feat like no other.”

DeLany earned one of the four MVP awards handed out at the meet. Kaylee Oswald of Wellsville earned the Female Field MVP award after winning the shot put and the discus. Other MVP awards went to Tyyetta Herman of Franklinville (Female Track) for wins in the 200m and 400m, and Ralph Johnson of Waverly (Male Track) for wins in the 100m and 200m.
