Deion Sanders needs emergency surgery to improve blood flow to legs, straighten out toes

Former Jackson State football coach Deion Sanders said on "Thee Pregame Show" Thursday on YouTube, that he will undergo emergency surgery Friday to fix blood clots in both legs.

The news comes after he developed blood clots in 2021 that led to the amputation of two toes on his left foot, causing him to miss three Jackson State football games that season.

The 55-year-old Sanders, now in his first year at Colorado, has two hammer toes out of the three on his amputated left foot. His doctors want to straighten the toes out, but Sanders is not receiving enough blood flow to do that.

In a visit last week with his doctors, Sanders also was told his blood circulation had worsened to the point where the blood pressure near his ankle had only 66% of the blood pressure of his arm. Another doctor told him then he risked amputation of that foot. But Sanders downplayed that Thursday in the video posted on the YouTube channel of his son Deion Jr.

"There is no talk of amputation," said Sanders, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame as one the game's best cornerbacks. "There is no talk of any of that. The doctors were just telling me, worse come to worse this is what is going to happen. But I believe in staying right so we never have to take that left."

Sanders added that he decided to seek medical help.

Sanders said he appreciates everyone's support.

"Now I can finally move forward and get this stuff fixed," Sanders said. "So, I'm having surgery tomorrow. Thank you for your prayers, thank you for your love and support and love. You have to understand, I am not going anywhere, cause we coming. I am trying to get all this straight so when we walk that sidelines and I walk my walk because I'm going to talk my talk, that I can walk my walk. God bless y'all and I appreciate you. I truly do."
