Decision made: United States calls Crew's Aidan Morris for Gold Cup duty

It appears Aidan Morris has decided which national team he wants to represent.

The 21-year-old midfielder who was named to both the United States and Canadian national teams’ preliminary 60-man rosters for the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League has accepted a call-up to represent the United States as one of 23 players in the upcoming Gold Cup.

Morris was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but he has Canadian citizenship through his father. He has appeared in two friendlies for the United States, neither of which tied him to the program and kept the door open for him to play for Canada. As recently as mid-May, Morris indicated he might wait until after the summer to decide which nation he’d ultimately like to represent. In an interview with ESPN, Morris said the opportunity to play in a World Cup would factor heavily into his decision.

Aidan Morris has previously represented the United States in two international friendlies.

Once Morris competes for the United States in an official game, he will be permanently cap-tied to the country. He received his first United States call-up for its January camp and played in a friendly against Serbia and in another against Mexico in April.

He has started all 17 games for the Crew this season and has three goals and three assists.

The United States will open Gold Cup play June 24 against Jamaica at Chicago’s Soldier Field.

Two other Crew players have been called up for this international window: Eloy Room (Curaçao) and Lucas Zelarayan (Armenia).
