Dawn at the Downs, a favorite for locals and visitors alike, is the time of day when the real hard work of horse racing happens. Starting just before daybreak, under the glow of the track’s spotlights, trainers, jockeys, and horses prepare for the Oaks and Kentucky Derby.

It is usually cool in the morning, and you can see the breath of these thoroughbreds as they exhale in the chilly morning air. For those in the know, this is often a time and place for aspiring and seasoned betters to take notes and keep an eye on the contenders’ performance as they try to plan their wagers for the Oaks and Kentucky Derby.
