Darrelle Revis tells backstory on Jets burying football after blowout loss to Patriots

After a 45-3 blowout loss to the New England Patriots in 2010, New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan infamously buried a football to put the game to bed.

The team was extremely confused as Ryan walked them to the practice field and held a funeral for the football. Hall of Fame cornerback Darrelle Revis even said it was Ryan’s best motivational tactic.

“I’ve never seen a coach do that,” Revis said. “We all got the point. Usually, in the past, you hear a coach say, ‘Let’s bury this’ and you have to visualize it. When you actually see it, you’re like, ‘Wow, this is serious.'”

On Bleacher Report’s ‘Untold Stories’, Revis elaborated on the moment that was so odd and intriguing.

Revis claimed the technique worked — as the Jets defeated the Patriots 28-21 in the divisional playoffs that season.
