Danny Green explains why he made his return to Sixers in free agency

The Philadelphia 76ers brought back a familiar face late in free agency in the form of Danny Green. The veteran out of North Carolina played two seasons in Philadelphia from 2020-2022 and is back after playing 11 games in 2022-23 for the Memphis Grizzlies and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Green averaged 7.8 points and 3.2 rebounds while shooting 39.5% from deep during his time in Philadelphia. He developed a good relationship with Joel Embiid and he also played for coach Nick Nurse while with the Toronto Raptors in 2018-19 as they won the title.

Green hopped on the “76ers Insiders” podcast to explain why he chose to return to Philadelphia:

Being familiar with the city, being familiar with the team, and the group, those guys having minutes on the floor with them and knowing how they operate was a big decision aside of playing for Nick so both those combined made it easy decision for me. I know that I can play in the system or play with those guys and thrive. We know how to play off each other and, hopefully, figure it out and make it work regardless of who was coaching and who’s on the floor. We can make something special happen and I feel like there’s some unfinished business. Both years I was here, the first two times, I had gotten hurt in the playoffs against Atlanta. I felt we had a good shot and against Miami, Jo was hurt the first two games with his face. That thing was broken, and then I got hurt, and we were playing well at home. So, you know, who knows what would have happened if those things didn’t happen? So yeah, I think we had some unfinished business with the group that we had during those years. I think that we can still make something special happen with the guys that we have here now.

Green is on a non-guaranteed contract so he will have to earn his spot on the roster. At 36, it’s fair to wonder how much he has left in the tank, but he is still a valuable player thanks to his knowledge and his shooting prowess on the floor.
