Daniel Boone grad Chris Guiliano wins world swimming bronze as part of United States' 4×100 free relay

Jul. 23—Daniel Boone grad Chris Guiliano won a bronze medal Sunday as part of the United States' 4×100 freestyle relay at the world swimming championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

In the final, Guiliano teamed with Ryan Held, Jack Alexy and Matt King to finish third in 3:10.81. Australia won gold in 3:10.16 and Italy was second in 3:10.49.

Held led off for the U.S. with a split of 48.16. He was followed by Jack Alexy (47.56), then Guiliano (47.77). Matt King finished with a split of 47.32 to hold off China, which set an Asian record in 3:11.38.

In the prelims, the United had the top time of 3:11.63. Guiliano, in his first international meet, swam the leadoff leg of 48.30 on a team with Destin Lasco, King and Justin Rees.

Guiliano, a rising junior at Notre Dame, qualified for the world championships by finishing second to Alexy in the 100-meter freestyle at last month's U.S. swimming nationals.

The prelims in the 100 free will be Wednesday, with the final on Thursday.

Guiliano is seeded 17th in 47.98.
