Dabo Swinney gives Jeremiah Trotter injury update before Clemson football vs Duke game

CLEMSON — Clemson football opens the 2023 season with an ACC matchup vs. Duke at Wallace-Wade Stadium on Monday (8 p.m. ET, ESPN). On Thursday, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney updated the status of a few players.

Star linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr., who led the Tigers in tackles (92) and sacks (6.5) last season, is healthy and ready. He missed some time in preseason practices with a hamstring issue, but he said he's "feeling great" ahead of the first game of his junior season.

Defensive tackle Tré Williams missed both spring ball and preseason practice after having offseason shoulder surgery. The redshirt junior was not expected to start this season, with veterans Tyler Davis and Ruke Orhorhoro back, but he has been part of the tackle rotation when healthy. Swinney said Williams isn't ready to come back yet and indicated he might redshirt.

"We're going to really try to take it slow with him because we could get a year back with him," Swinney said. "We can hold him as long as we can, and let's really just fortify his body and get him in a great spot. Then if we can steal a year back, that would be great for us and for him."

Reserve wide receiver Troy Stellato missed last season with a torn ACL, then missed spring ball and was limited in preseason practices while recovering from surgery. Swinney said the redshirt sophomore has been back to practicing fully in the past week.

"He's looked really good for a guy that hasn't played in two years and a guy that's missed all of camp," Stellato said. "He's flashed for sure. There's no question that he could help us if he can just stay available."
