Cross country state finals roundup: P-W's Collin Farmer finishes as Division 3 champion

Collin Farmer ended his high school cross country career on top.

The Pewamo-Westphalia senior finished as the champion at the Division 3 state finals at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday morning. Farmer had a time of 15:39.1 and finished 12 seconds ahead of the runner-up, August Rohde from Reed City.

The state championship capped a dominant senior season for Farmer, who won his final five races. That included winning the Greater Lansing Cross Country Championships last month and the regional last week.

Farmer registered his third all-state finish and improved from his 26th place showing at the finals last year. The efforts from Farmer helped P-W finish seventh as a team.

Dansville’s Theodore Davis also placed in the top 10 and was ninth in 16:01.4.

Ithaca’s Landen Styka (16th), Saranac’s Nathan Day (22nd) and Olivet’s Lucas Hopkin (23rd) were also all-state.

DIVISION 2

St. Johns senior Isaac Staib led the finishers in the area, finishing 23rd with a time of 15:46.2. Staib was one of two Greater Lansing players to finish as all-state selections. Alma freshman Ezekiel Baltierra finished 24th.

Alma finished eighth in the team standings behind Baltierra.

Mason’s Alex Doneth just missed all-state honors and placed 32nd.

GIRLS

DIVISION 2

St. Johns’ Ava Schafer capped her dominant freshman with a fourth-place finish at the state meet. She had a time of 17:53.8 while helping St. Johns finish 10th as a team.

Schafer was one of three area runners to earn all-state status. Alma junior Ezgi Kurt was 15th and Mason senior Meghan Ford concluded her career with her fourth all-state showing by placing 18th.

St. Johns senior Abby Young was two spots shy of being all-state and finished 32nd.

DIVISION 3

Lansing Catholic senior Tessa Roe capped her career by finishing sixth at the state finals with a time of 18:14.8. Ithaca senior Liliana Lehnst also was all-state and placed 21st

Pewamo-Westphalia junior Whitney Werner just missed earning all-state status and finished 31st. She led the Pirates as they finished fourth in Division 3 with 199 points.

Lansing Catholic finished seventh and Ithaca took ninth.

DIVISION 1

Okemos capped its season by finished eighth as a team in Division 1. Lily Salazar led the Wolves and placed 52nd and Nicole Mays was 68th.
