Cross-country meets racing away with numerous regional competitors
Sep. 19—SOUTHWEST NORTH DAKOTA — The Western North Dakota cities of Beulah and Stanley last week contributed to the seemingly constant flow of cross-country competitions occurring with little time left on the calendar for good weather, and the events created some quality results, overall, for regional athletes. The dense-pack of meets, statewide and in the region, last week and this week resulted in the cancellation of the traditional Becki Wells Invitational, which was scheduled for Thursday here in Dickinson and with all the other meets — nine altogether from Tuesday, Sept. 19 through Saturday, Sept. 25 — and a lack of competitors scheduled for the Becki Wells event, it will have to resume in 2024 at the earliest.
In Beulah on Sept. 15, at the Black Sands Golf Course, the girls' Miner team might have finished in third in their Beulah-Hazen Invitational home meet on the varsity side, but there was another standout performance by New England's Noa Sancho, who turned in a first-place 20:25.44 in the 5,000-meter race. Other area female athletes turning in solid showings were Hettinger-Scranton's Kayla Schauer, who came in eighth with a 23:49.53, and her sister and teammate Kelly Schauer, who finished in 10th with a 24:12.25. Beulah had another two competitors who finished in the top-20 with Paige Hetzler's 13th-place 25:06.91 and fellow Miner Alyssa Lais with a 15th-place 25:29.91. Heart River's Serra Buerckle was the team's top-performer with a 17th-place 25:52.88 to round out other area athletes in the girls' 5,000-meter at Beulah.
On the boys' side, the area results were few-and-far-between, but Beulah's Logan Neuberger contributed a third-place 18:28.18 for the Miners and Hettinger-Scranton's Trevor Dailey came in close-behind with an 18:50.41 and third-place, with Jaxon Rolle racing across the finish-line with a seventh-place 19:07.94 for Glen Ullin-Hebron. Other top-20 performers included three from Beulah — at 12th. Brady Keller, 19:49.56; 17th. Mason DeVore, 20:12.41 and 18th. Charles Elmore, 20:35.31 — while Glen Ullin Hebron's Riley Scneider took 19th with a 20:41.97.
Beulah finished third in the meet and Glen Ullin-Hebron took fifth.
North West Conference-Stanley
In Stanley on Sept. 12, at the Prairie Rose Golf Course, The Killdeer Cowboys boys' team finished in second with a great total-team performance as Jekori Dahlen took second-place with a 17:11.61 and his brother, Nekori, raced to a seventh-place 18:15.61 for KHS and Riley Schollmeyer turned in a 24th-place 19:57.92 to help the team. Glen Ullin-Hebron's Jaxon Rolle turned in an eighth-place 18:24.89 to get the Bearcats to fifth-place.
On the girls' side, Killdeer took first with a pair of top-3 results from Addie Miller with a 20:26.83 and Abby Hardersen's third-place 21:00.17. The other three outstanding performances were 11th-place Taylee Andersen with a 23:44.45, 13th-place Autumn Arndt with a 23:55.14 and Hailey Klym's 15th in the event at 23:58.08 for the Cowboys girls' team.
