Crawford: Torkelson has unquestionable power

Chris Crawford believes Detroit Tigers rookie Spencer Torkelson has intriguing upside by making Detroit's Opening Day roster, but how high should you pick him in fantasy baseball drafts?

CHRISTOPHER CRAWFORD: Spencer Torkelson got the word that he'd make the Detroit roster to begin the year, and it was good news for him, fans of the Tigers, and potentially fantasy managers. The first overall pick of the 2020 draft has enjoyed a solid Grapefruit League season and launched his first homer of the spring on Sunday against the Phillies. Now power is one thing no one can question with Torkelson. There's easy top of the scale pop in his right-handed bat, and it helped him hit 30 homers in his first professional season while reaching Triple-A. But this is not a one-tool player.

The 22-year-old can make hard contact to all parts of the field, and it would not be a shock at all if he contributed in the average category as well. While Torkelson is almost assuredly going to play first base for the Tigers in 2022 and beyond, he does have third base eligibility in Yahoo leagues, and that adds to the fantasy intrigue. He's going on average with the 231st pick in those leagues, and he's well worth consideration before that now that we know his service time will not be manipulated.
