Corner defeats American Christian Academy to force a Game 3 in the 4A championship series
JACKSONVILLE — A Max Hill single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Corner the 7-6 win over American Christian Academy in Game 2 of the 4A state championship series, forcing a winner-take-all contest for the title.
The Patriots held the 6-5 lead going into the bottom half of the seventh inning. Jace Boyd hit a double to center field to get things started in the seventh for Corner. Brendan Conner was intentionally walked, and Brodie Dunlap hit a double to left center to score the tying run. Hill then came to the plate, hitting the single to force a Game 3.
American Christian Academy took Game 1 on Wednesday by a score of 7-2. Game 3 of the series will be played approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 2.
The Patriots were first to get on the board in the top of the first inning thanks to a Jackson Willingham RBI single to score Eric Hines. Corner was quick to respond, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning behind two RBIs from Huell Hill and one from Conner.
A Bubba Lester single turned triple due to a fielding error scored two ACA runs in the top of the third inning to tie the game at 3-all. The score did not remain tied for long, as Corner regained the lead in the bottom half of the third inning off of a Max Hill sacrifice fly to take the 4-3 advantage. Corner went onto add another run in the fifth inning off of a Conner solo home run.
ACA regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning, scoring three runs off of three hits to take the 6-5 lead.
Lester finished the game leading the Patriots with two RBIs while going 1-for-4 from the plate. Clayton Rice, Jackson Willingham and Evan Lightsey each added on one RBI for the Patriots. Coltyn Mitchell pitched the complete game for ACA, giving up seven runs on 12 hits and striking out four.
