Contract talks between the Steelers and Ben Roethlisberger coming soon

If the Pittsburgh Steelers have any hope of remaining relevant in 2021 they need quarterback Ben Roethlisberger back and they will need him to come back on a discount. The Steelers have already said they don’t plan to have Roethlisberger back at his $41 million cap hit and Roethlisberger has said he just wants to play no matter how much he makes.

According to ESPN NFL report Jeremy Fowler, the two sides are going to come together next week to see if they can do some planning for their future.

The best bet for all involved is for the Steelers to sign Roethlisberger to a three-year contract extension with voidable years after 2021. It would give the Steelers a chance to knock something in the neighborhood of $19 million off the 2021 cap and allow the Steelers to move on from him after the season with minimal salary cap repercussions. Roethlisberger has earned more than $250 million in the NFL so it would be huge for him to take one for the team with this final contract.
