What are the Commanders getting in Nick Gates?
The Washington Commanders kicked off the legal tampering period Monday, wasting no time in fixing their offensive line. The first move the Commanders made was agreeing to terms with New York Giants offensive lineman Nick Gates.
The terms of Gates’ deal are for three years and $18 million.
What are the Commanders getting in Gates?
Let’s first speak to his versatility. In his five NFL seasons, Gates has played guard, center and tackle. But the most incredible part of the former undrafted free agent’s career thus far was his comeback from a gruesome leg injury he suffered in Sept. 2021 vs. Washington.
Gates suffered multiple breaks in his leg and underwent seven surgeries. Miraculously. just over 13 months after that injury, Gates was activated and returned to his starting spot on New York’s offensive line. He played in 10 games, making eight starts for the Giants.

“You’re getting a good one in Nick Gates,” Benton said. “For real. You and Washington fans are gonna LOVE that dude.”
Where will Gates play for the Commanders? We asked Dan.
“He can [play everywhere], better inside at guard and center,” Benton answered. “Can be a starting center. Top-of-the-line intensity, tremendous teammate, good with fans and media. Give 150% at all times without fail. Is gonna piss off opponents on the regular because he plays through the whistle. Incredibly intense, huge heart, loves the game.”
